Subsidiary Aims
-
To practice writing like a model.
Procedure (45-55 minutes)
The teacher starts a discussion about smartphones by asking some questions: Do you have a smartphone? Is it useful? What are the advantages of smartphones?
The teacher provides the students with a reading lesson in the form of a web article about smartphones and a comment on this web article. The teacher discusses the comment (the model) with the students and asks them some analytical questions. How did the writer start his/her comment? Which expressions did he/she use for giving reasons?
The teacher starts discussing the web article with the students to help them come up with some ideas that would help them write a successful comment. What did you think of the article? Are you concerned about all the personal information that is collected by smartphones? Have you ever had a problem because personal information was shared? Do you know anyone who has gotten hacked
Students are now given the chance to start writing their own comment on the web article they have read and discussed with the teacher. The teacher observes the students, answers their questions and helps them through the task.
The teacher checks the students first attempt in writing a comment on a web article. The teacher helps the students by highlighting the common mistakes and helps them self-correct them. The students are then given the chance to edit their writings and correct their mistakes for a better result.
