TBL - Used to
Intermediate level
Materials
Main Aims
-
By the end of the lesson, sts will have been introduced to the meaning, form, pronunciation and the usage of "used to" in the context of school memories.
Subsidiary Aims
-
By the end of the lesson, sts will have been practiced listening for gist and speaking for fluency in the same context.
Procedure (21-29 minutes)
I will start the lesson by telling sts a story about my school memories, I'll use "used to" in some sentences so sts could do the same. I'll ask them if they remember one specific memory from their childhood.
After the discussion, I'll let sts listen to part of the song, "Remember the Days of the Old Schoolyard by Cat Stevens". I'll ask them to listen and we can discuss what the singer used to have in his school and what he remembers.
I'll use the text provided in the book to highlight the TL. I will ask sts, in a group, to underline or note down the memories or the habits the singer used to have. ICQ: what are you going to underline?.
• I will use two marker sentences from the song for the target language: "We used to laugh a lot, oh don't you?" 'We used to cry a lot, oh don't you?' I will try to elicit that these actions used to happen in the past by using CCQs to see if they are using the TL correctly. This is followed by clarification of meaning, pronunciation, and form.
Controlled practice 1: Sts will rewrite some sentences using "used to". (pair- work - 5 mins) Controlled practice 2: Sts will try to imagine what people used to do before inventions. (pair- work - 5 mins) Freer practice: Sts will try to think back to their childhood and talk about some memories (practice 2, page19). (group work - 6 mins)
- I will praise good language that sts used and correct the errors if there are any. - Wrapping up.
