Procedure (45-55 minutes)
Focus ss' attention on the Powerpoint pictures and try to elicit as much information from them as possible. For example: Who is s/he? What’s his/her job? A customs officer
Elicit, concept check, drill and write (if necessary) the following vocabulary: Have you got anything to declare? a passenger to pay tax/duty perfume cigarettes whisky/wine A lot of + noun – countable or uncountable Most of this vocabulary will be in the form of realia and pictures
Elicit what the ss think the customs officer is saying to the passenger. See what they can come up with and flash up the conversation in stages. The language focus is here is: How much ..have you got? How many…. have you got? Have you got any…..s? some perfume some cigarettes some alcohol some whisky/wine A lot of + noun – countable or uncountable Concept check by asking ss to differentiate between how much and how many – countable/uncountable. Drill the question forms, focussing on rise/fall intonation for the Wh-questions and rising for the Yes/No questions. Write forms on the board, eliciting from the ss, highlighting parts of speech, stress and intonation. Make sure they have copied them correctly whilst monitoring.
Demo the task as a class using open pairs then get the ss to work in closed pairs. Provide handouts. CHANGE PAIRS! Now elicit other items/different quantities and have the ss act out the dialogues as a role play, changing the dialogues as appropriate. Demo carefully, then allow ss to work unaided.
Explain and demonstrate that now they will ask each other and try to find 3/6 things that are the same, depending on time. monitor and help if necessary. Get ss to ask the trainees if time is available. Write up a mixture of correct and incorrect forms and allow ss time to decide in their groups.
