Main Aims

  • Students will have exposure to, clarification of, and practice with, functional language for "Formal Negotiations", in the context of Municipal development.

Subsidiary Aims

  • Students will have practice for speaking fluency.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Ss discuss questions in pairs - "Has there ever been a building project in your city or country that you were very excited about, or disagreed very strongly with? 2 mins OCFB

Gist (Optional Activity) (4-4 minutes) • T provide Ss with listening practice for gist in the context of negotiations about municipal projects.

Ss listen to a short audio and complete a couple questions about the overall content. 1-2 minutes OCFB

Highlighting (4-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Ss listen to a short audio and complete a "gap-fill" activity. 2 minutes, pairs OCFB

Clarification (10-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Ss complete "Meaning/Form Guided Discovery" 3 minutes OCFB T shares screen "Jamboard pronunciation" Meaning I could have a look at that with my team/group and see what they think- -Expressing possibility/openness to offer CCQ-Is the speaker refusing the offer?(no) CCQ-Can the person make a decision on their own?(no) CCQ- Does the person need the opinion of others?(yes) Could you expand on that a little? -Asking for detail/clarification CCQ-First, does anyone know what ‘expand’ means? (to become/be made larger) CCQ-What does the speaker want to expand? ( the other speaker's comments, details) Synonym- What’s another way to say this? ( Could you clarify that a little, could you talk more about that..) I'm afraid that's not a possibility because... -Refusing an offer CCQ-Is the person afraid of something?(no) CCQ- Is the person going to take the offer?(no) Synonym-What’s another way to say this? ( We can’t because.. etc..) Ss Roleplay a simplified negotiation using the target language. (Developer/Government): 1. Why do you want the land? 2. Why is this a good thing? (Travel, Business, Tourism, Infrastructure...) 3. Can you offer anything to ease their concerns? 4. Price offer? (Landowner/ Town Representative): 1. Rent your land for development- Yes, no or maybe? 2. Reasons to rent or not rent your land? (Environment, Wasteful, Good for Jobs/Business..) 3. Do you have any conditions or concerns? 4. Accept price offer? (Yes, no, maybe)? Useful Phrases- Could you expand on that a little?
