Teaching Practice 8
Elementary level

Description

In this lesson, students are going to read two wedding cards that introduce wedding vocabulary. The teacher will use pictures (PP slides) and students' feedback to elicit the new vocabulary. Then students will skim the two cards to answer the two questions that the teacher gives. After that, the teacher asks the students and takes the answers as feedback. Students will be divided into two groups to read the two cards again individually and answer/discuss the questions of ex 2 and 3. After students finish discussion the teacher asks two questions for feedback and provides each group with the key answers to check. Then the teacher shows ex 4 on the board asking the students to go to the board and fill the gaps (sts will be given some time to read). After that, if the time doesn't run fast the teacher asks them to do ex 6 and compare their answers in pairs. The teacher asks randomly for feedback. Then students will be put into two groups to discuss some advice to two friends coming from London to spend their holiday in Istanbul. After they finish the teacher asks curiously receiving answers as feedback. If there is time left students will listen to 'Holiday' song choosing the correct answers..

Main Aims

  • To provide gist, scan and detailed reading about wedding

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification of some words related to wedding

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (1-2 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

The teacher will welcome the students and asks the students about their marital status. He receives immediate feedback without going into details..

Pre-Reading (5-10 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Teacher asks some questions about wedding using the questions in ex 1 page 68 (SB). He presents a slide picture of a Turkish wedding on the board eliciting the vocabulary. He clarifies the meanings of the words and drills them, then writes them on the board. Students will be notified that THE words will be used for reading the cards.

While-Reading (1) (3-4 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist task

The teacher informs the students that they are going to read two ''wedding cards''. He gives the students the sheets and asks them to read quickly in order to choose the right answer (two multiple choice questions to choose what each card is about). Then he asks them to compare the answers in pairs. The teacher asks for feedback.

While-Reading (2) (6-13 minutes) • To provide students with challenging detailed tasks

Students will be put into two groups then the teacher asks them to read the two cards individually with some concentration and discuss their answers within the group. He asks few questions for feedback and gives the students the answer key to check their answers.

While-Reading 3 (5-7 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed task (verb collocations)

The teacher shows the ex 4a on the board and clarifies to the students the nature of the task. He asks them to read the cards deeply this time and move towards the board to write THE words or THE phrases in the right columns (some time is to be given for reading). After students finish doing ex 4a and the time doesn't distract the teacher distributes questions of ex 6 and asks the students to answer then discuss their answers in pairs. He asks for feedback.

Post-Reading (3-9 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Students will be divided into two groups and asked to discuss and take notes for writing an email to a friend coming from London to visit Istanbul. The teacher provides the students with questions of ex 7 to answer them while they are discussing. If the time factor rus positively the teacher will give the students the song of ''Holiday'' asking them to choose the correct words or phrases while they are listening. He provides the answer key after a while!
