To provide clarification and practice of 'Used To' for Past Habits and States

To provide fluency and accuracy speaking practice using 'used to' when talking about past habits and states
Procedure (45-55 minutes)
Picture of an old man- elicit information about the man's life now and in the past.
TL will be introduced and students will be asked Concept Checking Questions for meaning.
Students will be shown a diagram to further highlight the meaning of the TL
Students will practise meaning through an individual matching exercise. They will compare answers and then finish with eliciting the correct answers in open class.
Students will analyse the sentences in the Practise Meaning exercise, and through guided discovery find the affirmative, negative and interrogative forms of the TL. There will then be open class feedback.
Students will complete sentences with the correct form of the verbs in brackets, compare and then check answers in open class.
Students identify elements of connected speech when using the TL. They're asked to identify the individual sounds /s/ or /z/, and the elision of /d/ and /t/ The connected speech will then be drilled and individual students will be asked to practise.
Students watch a short video comparing life in the past and life today. They try to say 2 things people used to do and 2 things they didn't use to do. Share ideas in open class! Write on the WB.
