Description

In this lesson the learners will pratice their listening skils for gist and specific information in the context of a healthy life balance.

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed listening practice using a text about habits and routnes in the context of healthy lifestyle

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification of healthy, lifestyle, leisure, shift in the context of a lifestyle

Procedure

Lifestyle Balance Lead-in Confessions (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context, activate top-down knowledge and engage students

The teacher greets the class and confesses that he does not study everyday, then asks students: Do you study everyday? Yes or no? The teacher then confesses to not have a Healthy Lifestyle, because he does exercise one day in the entire month. Then asks the class do you do exercise every day? Yes or no? If time allows teacher asks how much? To finish the teacher says that he has lunch with his family everyday, and asks the students if it is good or bad. If felt prudent the teacher personalizes each question and tries to embed when clarifying the meaning of each of the words in capital letters..

Pre-Reading/Listening/Blocking Words (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible, in particular familiarizing the students with new vocablulary

The teacher presents the first slide of the section with the words and asks the students if they know the words. Then passes on to slides 2 to 5 of the presentation. in each there is an illustration of the word, pronunciation, a simple definition, model sentence and a yes/no CCQ of it. After this the number 6 slide send them to do the Google Forms Activity Number 1 with one true / false question for each, totalling 4. They are assigned to do it in pairs or a three person group in the case of an odd number. Then the teacher sets the screen to the countdown timer. After the 3 minutes time slot for the exercise is over the teacher will dedicate 2 minutes to OCFB with slide 7 that has the correct answers, with this the Pre Reading/Language Awareness section is over

While-Listening #1 Gist (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

To present this task the teacher begins by showing the first slide of the section which states that this is a Listening Skills Task and its context, a balanced lifestyle. After this the teacher passes to slide number 2 which has the 3 questions the teacher has included in the multiple choice activity in Google Forms and the request to listen for them, explaining that if they disconnect they can access the audio through the link in the form. The teacher asks them to open the Google Forms Activity Number 2 and asks them to answer the questions, having the listening task plus 2 minutes. During this time the teacher displays the countdown timer on the screen, when the time is over asks them to peer check in breakout room for 2 more minutes (in a preset time Breakout Room) and then on slide three the correct answer key is revealed during OCFB.

While Listening #2 Listening for Specific Details (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference listening task

For this stage the teacher begins with a slide that shows this is Stage 2 of the task, then gives the instructions to the students with a second slide detailing them. Which will be that this time they wil work in pairs from the very beginning and they have to do Activity Number 3 of the Google Forms exercise in which they will have to answer 4 true / false questions about the text. They will listen to the text and have a slide with the questions displayed at the same time. After it they have a total of 3 minutes to conclude the exercise. At this point it is indicated to them that they can use the link in the exercise sheet to listen to the recording once again if they feel they need it. after the text finishes playing the teacher sets up the timer countdown and monitors the time-limited breakout rooms. After the time is over the teacher begins the OCFB procedure once more and shows the correct answer key in the presentation.

Post-Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

For this stage of the lesson the Teacher will show a new slide or two with two questions and model answers: Are you happy with your lifestyle balance? I am happy with my lifestyle balance because... I am not happy with my lifestyle balance because... What would you add to your lifestyle? I would add...to my lifestyle. or What would you eliminate from your lifestyle? I would eliminate...fom my lifestyle. Then gives students 4 minutes to discuss with a partner so that after the chat they can report on their partner. Assigns the students to time-limited Breakout Rooms, runs the countown timer on the screen and monitors the students. After the time is over OCFB begins with the teacher nominating the first student and requesting said student to nominate the next one continuing this procedure for the next four minutes. When they are over the teacher stops the activity and thanks the students and shows a thank you slide to them concluding the class.
