Speaking for fluency

Description

In this lesson, students will learn when to use let and make according to the context. Then, students will listen to a boy talking about an activity he used to do in the past. Finally, students will speak freely about the activities they used to do in the past.

Main Aims

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T elicits from Ss their parents' rules when they were kids. T asks: Did your parents let you walk alone? Did your parents make you sleep early and get up early? Ss answer these questions. T elicits from Ss adjective to describe their parents, such as, strict and lenient.

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

T gets Ss to skim a text about parents' rules and answer Yes/No question. Ss fill in the gaps using the words let me / us, or made me / us. Ss check in pairs, followed by WC feedback. T illustrates MPF for the verbs let and made.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

T asks Ss to look at the picture of the boy and gets them to describe the boy, what activity he is doing, and whether his parents let him or make him do this activity : smart - playing kung fu . T elicits from Ss the word martial. T illustrates MPF. T asks Ss if they played martial arts in the past. T elicits what activities Ss played in the past. Ss listen to the boy talking about an activity he used to do when he was a kid. Ss listen and underline the correct information. Ss check in pairs, followed by WC feedback.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

T gets Ss to answer the questions in the listening activity about themselves. T gives Ss time to read these questions and think about what to say and how to say it. T divides Ss into groups of threes to ask and answer each other about their activities when they were kids. T monitors and take notes of Ss' mistakes. T provides error correction.

Free practice 2 • To provide students with more practice for fluency.

T divides Ss into groups of four to act a role play, dad, mom, grandma, and a kid. T illustrates that the kid wants to do anything like eating unhealthy food, such as, chips. His mom and his dad disagree but his grandma agrees. T writes on board some topics to help Ss talk, such as, eating ice-cream, wearing special clothes, staying up late with friends, drinking special drinks, playing martial arts. T knocks on WB to get Ss to exchange roles.

IF Time Activity • To provide students with more free practice

T divides Ss into groups according to the number of photos that Ss bring as I told them to bring their old photos. Give each group a photo and ask them to mingle to find this photo is for whom. Ss find their classmate and ask him / her questions, such as, How old were you? What did you do on that day? Why were you happy / sad?
