Main Aims

  • To provide process writing practice of a letter in the context of job references

  • To provide review of work lexis in the context of job references

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T asks students to imagine they are applying for a job and they need to find 2 referee's S answers 2 questions in groups: 3 mins 1) Who would you ask to be your referee? 2) What is included in an employers confidential reference?

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through reading/listening

S are given a list of statements given by referee's S decides in groups if the statements are positive or ambiguous 5 mins Come together as a class to discuss answers.

Useful Language (8-10 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

T outlines grocery store cashier Sam's duties and responsibilities 2 minutes T outlines a template for creating a reference for the employee. 2-3 minutes S learn key vocabulary related to creating references. 2-3 minutes

Productive Task(s) (18-20 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

S gets in groups and writes a reference for Sam.12 mins

Feedback and Error Correction (8-10 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

S gets a checklist: 1) Are all elements present? - Factual paragraph - Paragraph describing weakness/strengths - Why Sam is leaving - Brief summary of paragraph 2 - Job recommendation. 2) Would you accept Sam for the job after reading the other group's recommendation? 3) Why? or Why not? S answers questions in groups
