Cold and Flu, vocabulary in listening

Description

In this lesson, Ss will learn new vocabulary in the context of 'cold' and 'flu'. They start discussing about what do would do in case of getting cold and flu, and then learn new vocabulary related to the symptoms of the above-mentioned sicknesses. Then they listen to an audio which talks about the difference of 'cold' & 'flu' and try to find the gist, followed by another listening to find specific information. At the end, Ss discuss the matter with each other.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (4-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students in the topic and set the context

- Show the pic - Elicit from the Ss - Show the pic of 'home', 'school', 'doctor', 'medicine', and 'work' - Asks Ss "In case of getting cold, what would you do?" - T gives Ss one minutes to think - T sends Ss into PW to discuss it briefly with each other - T monitors

Pre-Listening/Pre-teaching Vocabulary (2-4 minutes) • To make the listening easier to understand

- T shows pictures with six cold's symptoms - T elicits each word regarding each pic from Ss - T CCQs words for their meaning - T practice pronunciation + Drill + stress

Pre-Listening/Prediction (4-6 minutes) • To activate background knowledge (schema)

- T asks Ss "Do you know the difference between 'cold' & 'flu' - T lets Ss to brainstorm - T shows Prediction slide which prompts are provided for Ss - ICQs for the task - Ss discuss as PW - T gives FB

While-Listening/Gist (7-9 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information listening tasks

- T shows 'Gist Slide' - ICQs before playing the audio file - Ss listen individually - Ss discuss answers as PW - T monitors + FB

While-Listening/Specific Information (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

- T shows 'Specific Information Slide' - ICQs before the second listening - Ss listen as group and then do PW to check their answers together - T checks answers and FB

Post-Listening/Follow-up (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

- T shows 'Follow-up Slide' - ICQs before task - Ss discussions - T monitors and gives FB if necessary
