Description

In this lesson, Ss will focus on listening for gist and detail within the context of the news. Also, Ss will be given the opportunity for speaking.

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and specific information listening practice using recordings in the context of The news

  • To provide speaking practice in a conversation in the context of the news

Procedure

Lead-in (4-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Ss wil be placed in groups and introduced to realia in the form of newspapers. Ss will provide the T with answers to questions regarding the realia introduced. Ss will answer questions about the topics within the newspapers and what elements a newspaper contains.

Pre-Listening (6-8 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Ss will be given slips of paper with major 2013 news events to match pictures on the WB. Ss will use PW. Ss will also need to number the events from greatest to least. Ss must speak with their partner about news in order to complete this activity, thus achieving the sub-aim speaking.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (6-8 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information listening tasks

Ss will listen to a recording once for gist and fill in the blank on the HO.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (6-8 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference listening tasks

Ss will listen a second time for specific information and complete a matching activity on the second HO. These listening activities will accomplish the main aim of the LP.

Post-Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Students will fill out a gap-fill then a table involving news responses. Ss will be given the answers.

Extra speaking practice (5-6 minutes) • To provide students with speaking practice of the target language

Ss will use PW and respond to their partners after the recording. Ss will be placed in "A" and "B" categories. The recording will be listened to twice with Ss changing roles.
