Procedure (39-65 minutes)
T writes on the board 'What makes something art?' and asks ss what to jot down their top 10 list of the characteristics of art for 3 mins then they discuss their list with a partner for 2 mins. Then T elicits their list to write and discuss on the board for 4 mins, asking them to elaborate using examples
T writes the title '60 minutes of fame: living statues' and asks ss to predict what the text is about (1 min), then WCFB. Then ss skim the text for 2 mins to confirm their predictions then WCFB. Then ss do ex. 3 p.104 for 3 mins, peer checking then WCFB. Then ss do ex.4 for 3 mins individually then WCFB. Ss then look at the last paragraph and compare Martin Douglas' and Rachel Lockwood's opinions about the idea. Then T writes 'What is the aim of the text?' on the board to elicit form the ss the author's purpose in writing the text. Then ss do ex. 5 p.104 for 2 mins then they share their ideas in pairs then WCFB
Ss look at the statements in ex.6A p.105 to see if they agree with any of them (1 min) (T already has the Ms on the board or a newspaper sheet), pair discussion (2 mins) then WCFB (2 mins). Then ss focus ont he underlined phrases within the sentences to solve ex 6b (2 mins), pair checking (1 min) then WCFB.
T presents TL as per the LA sheet (MFP)
Ss do ex. 7 p.105 then ex.1b p.145. If there is time, Ss can do ex.2 or 3 in WB p.60.
In pairs, ss do the less controlled task on p.177 in the Teacher's guide for 10 mins (T copies the task and splits it in half and assigns As and bs in each pair). T monitors and gives feedback on TL mistakes.
