Materials
Main Aims
-
To provide gist, scan, detailed and inference reading practice the text is about 100 places to visit before you die in the context of travel
Subsidiary Aims
-
To provide a paragraph about a place he liked of those mentioned in the lesson.
Procedure (45-57 minutes)
I will print photos of the places in the lesson on flashcards to prepare the students for a game related to the lesson. After printing the photos, I will flip each one of them and on the back of every flashcard, I will write a number from 1 to 5. After that, I will divide the students into 5 groups and every group will have to choose a number then, they will have to flip the flashcard and tell any information they would know about the place. The model answer may be: 1- I think it is a mountain (for the Grand Canyon). 2- This site seems to be very old (for Petra, Jordan). 3- I think this place is in Europe (for Venice, Italy). 4- There are many hotels (for Las Vegas). 5- It sounds like a beach. (for Koh Samui).
- I will start this phase by teaching vocabulary which might block understanding of the text. These words are (incredible, splendid, abandon, amphitheater, replicas, and gondola). - I will begin by teaching the words " incredible and splendid" through their synonyms" amazing and wonderful". I will write 4 sentences and I will ask 4 students to read them. Ali is amazing. / Majed is wonderful. Mohammed is incredible. Ameer is splendid. I will ask the students if these sentences are alike. After I hear their answers, I will tell them all the highlighted words have the same meaning. -Therefore, I will teach the word " abandon" by showing a photo of a man who is smoking then I will show them a photo of a man who stops doing it. I will ask a question " what do you think happened to the man? He abandoned (stopped) smoking. -I will teach the word "amphitheater" by showing a picture to the students and I will ask them what do you think of this place? Is it used for sports in the old times? some of the students may agree then I will say it is like a stadium where people used to play sports. -I will teach the word " replicas" by showing the students two photos of the Eiffel tower. The first is the original one in France and its copy that exists in Las Vegas. I will ask what is the original and what is the copy or and I stress the word replicas. Then I ask if I want to say that a thing has an exact copy what would I say? I will pick one of the students who will answer" It is replicas". - The word" gondola " by showing them a photo of it and say it three times then, I will write it on the board and ask one of them to try to spell the letters till it is written correctly. - I will elicit the words, drill them. At the end of the activity, I will write them on the board.
This part is about giving students the chance to predict the topic of our lesson. I will ask the students some questions and their model answers are provided as well: 1- What do you think about our lesson today? • It's about several places as there are five different pictures. • Maybe the topic is connected to tourism. • They are not in one country. They are in five countries. 2- Why should we visit these places? • Because they look fantastic. • They are varied. I can see historical places like Petra and I can see modern places like Las Vegas. • They can attract people of various tastes. People who love history will go to Petra, those who love adventure will go to the Grand Canyon. 3- Look at the pictures and say what do you think? • I think the Grand Canyon is a mountain. • I think Venice is a coastal city. • Koh Samui is an island. 4- What do you expect about the genre of our text today? • It's a descriptive text as I can notice the description of the places here and there are numbers which assure my answer.
• This stage will be about " gist reading". I prepared videos of the places in the videos and every video is about 1 minute only. I will some them the videos to arouse their attention then, I will ask the students some questions so they can get the general ideas about the text. • How many places are located in the USA? • There are two places, The Grand Canyon and Las Vegas. • Why would think" Koh Samui" is an island? • Because I noticed that it is the second-largest island after Phuket. • Do you think that "Petra" is in the middle east? • Yes, because it is in Jordan. • Where is the city of Venice? • It is in Italy.
This stage about the inferring task. I will ask the students some questions which they can guess and infer their answers from the text. 1- Why is the Grand Canyon called a " mountain lying down"? • Because it stretches down for 443 kilometers. 2- Can you mention three synonyms for the word "incredible"? • Unique, wonderful, and splendid. 3- What does "rediscover" mean? • It means to discover again. 4- What is the antonym of the word "unknown"? • It is "known" 5- What does the word " quickie" mean? • It means very quickly.
I will ask the students to write a paragraph about a place they would like to visit and mention the reasons for their choice.
