Procedure (30-43 minutes)
Show the pictures of WW1, Apollo 11, The fall of Berlin Wall, Atomic bomb, Hitler, internet, Steve Jobs, Titanic, Nelson Mandela, Obama, mobile phone, TV and computer. Start a discussion about these photos and elicit from the students that these are important events and inventions of the 20th. century.
Hand out the text about the fall of Berlin Fall. Students read the text and fill in the blanks with the words from the box
Hand out the questions about the text. Students work in pairs and answer the questions.
Clarify the target language on the board.
Hand out the gap-fill hand out. Students work in pairs and fill in the blanks with appropriate if clause word.
Refer students back to the pictures they saw at the beginning of the lesson. tell them they are going to choose an event and write what might have been different now if they had not happened. Offer them some sentence starters such as "If computer had never been discovered...."
