Description

In this lesson, students learn about the third conditional through guided discovery based on a text about 20th century. The lesson starts with a discussion about the important events of the 20th century. This is followed by reading and matching activity. Finally there is some controlled practice through a speaking activity

  • To provide accuracy speaking practice in a conversation in the context of history

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (2-4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Show the pictures of WW1, Apollo 11, The fall of Berlin Wall, Atomic bomb, Hitler, internet, Steve Jobs, Titanic, Nelson Mandela, Obama, mobile phone, TV and computer. Start a discussion about these photos and elicit from the students that these are important events and inventions of the 20th. century.

Exposure (5-8 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Hand out the text about the fall of Berlin Fall. Students read the text and fill in the blanks with the words from the box

Highlighting (4-6 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Hand out the questions about the text. Students work in pairs and answer the questions.

Clarification (3-4 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Clarify the target language on the board.

Semi-Controlled Practice (4-6 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

Hand out the gap-fill hand out. Students work in pairs and fill in the blanks with appropriate if clause word.

Free Practice (12-15 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Refer students back to the pictures they saw at the beginning of the lesson. tell them they are going to choose an event and write what might have been different now if they had not happened. Offer them some sentence starters such as "If computer had never been discovered...."
