Description

In this second lesson, students learn new vocabulary; familiarize themselves with the tools for keeping and working with new vocab; practice reading for gist and specific information; practice listening for gist.

Main Aims

  • To introduce and practice 3 primary reading techniques (skimming, scanning, reading for detail).
  • To teach the vocab denoting noises,sounds. To highlight the figurative meanings of some of these words.
  • To provide tools for keeping and working with topic-related vocabulary.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To introduce the essence of Reading and UoE (Part 5) and strategies to successfully complete this task
  • To introduce the essence of Listening (Part 4) and strategies to successfully complete this task
  • To practice listening for gist and complete an exam-style listening task (Part 4)
  • To practice speaking for fluency

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-8 minutes) • To set lesson context (sounds/noises) and engage students. To practice speaking for fluency.

Students share their views on city noises. Ex.1, p.9 (SB).

Presentation I (8-10 minutes) • To provide tools for keeping and working with topic-related vocabulary.

T introduces the concept of vocab spreadsheets.

Presentation II (10-12 minutes) • To introduce new words and clarify their meanings.

T walks Ss through the text on p.9 (SB) and elicits the definitions of the new words.

Practice (controlled). (10-15 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to use the new vocab in different contexts and test the comprehension of the new vocab.

Ss fill in the gaps (ex.3-6, p.9). The first sentence is completed with the assistance of T. T checks the answers and corrects errors, elaborates on the figurative meanings of the new words.

Production (10-15 minutes) • To practice using the new vocab.

Ss in pairs describe pictures on p.161 (SB) using as many new words denoting sounds/noises as possible. The description of the first picture is completed together with the help of T.

Pre-Reading (5-10 minutes) • To set the context (navigation in a city). To practice speaking for fluency.

Ss share their opinions on the issue of navigation in a city. Speaking, ex.1, p.10 (SB).

Presentation III (3-7 minutes) • To introduce the essence of Reading and UoE (Part 5) and strategies to successfully complete this task.To introduce 3 reading techniques.

Ss get acquainted with the fifth part of Reading and UoE and learn some tips and tricks (p.199) in order to complete this part of the exam successfully. T introduces skimming, scanning, reading for detail.

Reading for gist (5-10 minutes) • To practice reading for gist.

Ss skim the article on p.11 (SB) and try to convey its main idea in a couple of sentences.

Reading for specific information (20-30 minutes) • To practice scanning (and skimming).To introduce Part 5 of Reading and UoE and strategies to successfully complete this task

T walks Ss through the text and helps them to complete questions 1-2 from ex. 3 on p.11. Ss follow through with questions 3-6 from ex. 3 on p.11 on their own. T checks their answers.

Pre-Listening (3-5 minutes) • To set the context (available space in our homes). To practice speaking for fluency.

Ss share their opinions on how spacious their apartments/houses are. Ex.1, p.12.

Presentation IV (2-5 minutes) • To introduce the essence of Listening (Part 4) and strategies to successfully complete this task.

Ss get acquainted with the fourth part of Listening and learn some tips and tricks (p.203) in order to complete this part of the exam successfully.

Listening for gist (10-15 minutes) • To practice listening for gist.

Ss do ex. 3 (Task 1) on p. 12 (SB). T checks the answers.
