Pre-intermediate level

Description

In this lesson SS will use the vocabulary for describing people through the receptive skill of reading. They will read a 4-paragraph text. In order to get the SS engaged, we will have a WC discussion about how parents used to choose their children's husbands and wives. In the pre-reading stage, SS will see a photo of a girl and will describe her, both her appearance and personality and they will also learn that she will be part of an experiment. During while-reading 1 students will read the introduction and first paragraph for a gist and answer 4 questions for which FB will be done WC. As for the while-reading 2, SS will mark a st of statements true(T) or false(F) according to the rest of the text. After the FB, SS will focus on some underlined words from the text. By pairs, they will get a word or a definition cut out from 2 different colour paper. SS will match their work with the respective meaning going around the classroom. Once they are done, FB will be provided WC by calling some students to the WB to write the word to the definitions. Then, SS will be asked to use their assigned words to write an example. Finally, the post-reading will be done with the readings aside and the T asking the final comprehension questions.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide SS with practice in reading for gist, specific information and detail, and to practice deducing meaning though the context of choosing a blind date.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To give SS practice in speaking for fluency.
  • To consolidate and give SS practice in vocabulary to describe appereance and personality.

Procedure

Lead-in (2-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

The T tells SS about how her grandmother's husband was chosen by her parents and how this was a common practice in the past. Then, SS will be asked: Do parents choose their children's wife or husband in your country? How do you choose your life partner? SS will answer from their experience and knowledge of their culture.

Pre-Reading (3-5 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

SS will look at a photo of three women, Charlotte, her mother and her friend. T points at Charlotte, tells her name and asks SS to describe her personality and appearance. Then T will ask SS some questions such as: Where do you think she is from? How old is she? Where does she live? Once they are done, the T explains that she will take part in an experiment. T elicits from the SS the meaning of "experiment".

While-Reading #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

SS will be given the HO with the reading and comprehension questions. SS will read the introduction and the first paragraph to check whether their answers to the previous questions were correct. Next, SS will be asked to answer, in pairs, the first set of questions according to the introduction and paragraph 1. As for FB, some SS will be nominated to give the answers, if wrong, the WC will help correcting. During this task, the text will also be projected on the WB.

While-Reading #2 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading tasks

The reading will be displayed on the WB via the OHP. SS will read paragraphs 2-4 in order to mark true or false a set of 7 statements. This task will be performed in the same pairs they worked during WR#1. The FB will be done with the T reading the statement out loud and the SS answering chorally. Some SS will be asked to show the passage from which they deduced their answers.

While-Reading #3 (5-10 minutes) • To deduce the meaning of vocabulary from context

SS will be asked to focus on the underlined words from the text. Each couple will be given either one of the words or its definition. For this task the class will be visibly divides into 2 due to the coloured paper of the cut outs. There will be a set of words+definitions printed out on a coloured paper and a second set printed on a different coloured one. SS will be asked to stand up and move around in order to match a word with its correct definition. SS can only look for a match with SS having the same colour. For FB, the definitions will be displayed on the board and some SS from each half will be called to write the corresponding words. To check their understanding, SS will write a sentence with the word assigned, if easy for them, T will assign a different word.

Post-Reading (6-8 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

SS will be asked to turn their HO over. T will ask some questions from the text and SS will answer them from what they remember. SS will nominate SS from the ones who show signs of remembering the text.
