Description

In this lesson, Ss will practise their listening skill by paying attention to some details and also vocabularies in the context of a phone conversation. First, they will listen to an audio (listening for gist) to find out which rooms are they referring to and followed by a matching task to practise their listening skills. Then, they will listen to the same audio again (listening for details), paying attention to specific details and discuss in pairs with a list of questions. The audio script will be provided for feedback. Lastly, they will practise speaking and listening skills with vocabularies they have learned in this topic by asking and answering questions regarding what is important for them in choosing a place to stay with their peers.

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and specific information listening practice using a text about rooms and furniture in the context of a telephone conversation

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation or discussion in the context of room preferences.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Ask Ss to share their experiences in looking for rooms when they are travelling. "What is the first thing you will do when you are planning to visit a place? Looking for places to go? Looking for rooms? Planning on transportation?" Then T can elicit by sharing their own experiences and continue with the accommodation website.

Pre-Listening (5-8 minutes) • Listening for gist

T shows the website on the screen and play the recorded audio. Ss will have to listen for gist and discuss which place they were referring to in the phone conversation. T discuss the answer and provide feedback by highlighting the keywords in the main room.

While-Listening #1 (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information listening tasks

T send the link to Ss and they will be working in pairs to complete the matching activity together. Ss will be listening to the audio and match them with the correct vocabulary. Demonstrate the task before sending them to the BORs and remind them to play the audio a few times if they have couldn't hear it clearly.

While-Listening #2 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference listening tasks

T show exercise B on screen and remind Ss to take a screenshot. Play the recorded audio again and they will have to listen for specific detail this time. They will listen to the audio in the main room and discuss the answer with their peers in the BORs.

Post-Listening (10-12 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Ss work in pairs to discuss what is important for them in choosing a place to stay when they are travelling with vocabularies that they have learned in this topic. Ss will be able to practise their speaking and listening skills in this activity. They will then share their partner's answer in the main room.
