Subsidiary Aims

Procedure (33-43 minutes)
I will ask my Ss to discuss about following questions. '1 What do you have in your house?' '2 What do you do in your room?' I will give 30 seconds before the Break Out room session. I will give a minute to share their ideas in peers. ICQ: How much time do we have to discuss? - 1 minute. After that, OCFB. Anticipated problem: Some students need more than 1 minute to discuss about the topic. Solution: I will make a Break Out Rooms for 2 students only, to discuss it with short time. https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1LrRuzcsHSuN_fk_RVHoHKhpzyvCGGS0RGES47k-W53o/edit?usp=sharing
I will use the Google Slides, so Ss can read the text. I will ask Ss about a gist task below. 1. What is in the boy's room? - many books, a monkey doll, a small TV 2. What is in the girl's room? - a lovely dog, a big TV, a lot of family pictures Ss answer these question individually for 3 minutes. Ss compare answers in pairs on the private chat, and they share their answers on the chat box. Then, OCFB. CCQ: Does boy always watch TV? - No. What does the girl do on Friday? - She watches a movie. https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1LrRuzcsHSuN_fk_RVHoHKhpzyvCGGS0RGES47k-W53o/edit?usp=sharing
In the Exposure stage, I will ask the following questions. 'How do you know (the boy has a small TV) (it depends on the answer from Ss)?' 'Where is the sentence with the answer?' I will elicit the answer sentence with 'THERE IS' and 'THERE ARE'. I will highlight these sentences to clarify the TL. I will use different colours to show difference structures to Ss, especially 'IS' and 'ARE'.
<Meaning> I will show one example, 'There are many books on my desk.' to Ss. Ss will decide if the following sentences are TRUE or FALSE 1. We use THERE IS or THERE ARE to say places. - TRUE 2. We use THERE IS or THERE ARE to say time. - FALSE 3. We use THERE IS or THERE ARE to say people only. - FALSE I will give a minute to let Ss think individually, then I will encourage them to use private chat to share your answers with the peer. ICQ: How much time do you think the answer alone? - 1 minute. ICQ: Which do you use, Break Out Room or chat box? - Chat box. I will elicit answers from Ss in OCFB. CCQ: Do you say 'There is at five a.m.' ? - No. CCQ: Can you find 'she/he' only in the example sentence? - No. CCQ: In example, where are many books? - It is 'on my desk.' <Form> Ss choose the correct answer. 1. There (is or are) some cups in my kitchen. 2. There (is or are) a picture on my desk. 3. There is a TV next to the window. (There + be + Noun phrase) or (There + Noun phrase + be) I will give my Ss one minute, so Ss will think individually. I will make Break Out rooms after a minute. Ss will share their ideas. (I want to make Break Out rooms for 2 minutes because the form is the most important part in this lesson, I think. But it depends on the pace.) ICQ: How much time do you have in Break Out rooms? - 2 minutes. ICQ: Which do you do fast, talk with your peers or think your answer? - Think my answer. After the Break Out rooms, I will elicit answers from Ss in OCFB. CCQ: Do 'I' have one cup or more than 2 cups? - More than 2 cups. CCQ: Do 'I' have 3 pictures? - No. CCQ: Do you say 'There a TV is.'? - No. <Pronunciation> Ss will listen the CD fast, then Ss may find two sentences. There are lots of good shops. / There are lots of nice cafes. After that they will choose the correct answer. I will pick up one example, 'There are many books on the desk.' Q. Which pronunciation is correct There are / many … or There / are many …? Then, I will pick up the other sentence, 'There is a picture on the wall.' Q. Which pronunciation is correct There is / a picture … or There / is a picture …? Ss will think their answer individually with 1 minutes, and I will elicit the answer from them. I will pronounce these sentences with two different ways to clarify the difference for Ss. (If the time allows, I will make Break Out rooms before OCFB.) I will pronounce these sentences above once individually, and Ss drill the pronunciation chorally twice. https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1LrRuzcsHSuN_fk_RVHoHKhpzyvCGGS0RGES47k-W53o/edit?usp=sharing
