Description

In this lesson students will listen to a recording for gist, then for specific information and learn some new vocabulary on the "Going to Dinner" context.

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and specific information listening practice by using an audio recording about giving and taking some advice in the context of going to dinner at someone else's house in the UK

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification of some advice about manners in the context of going to dinner at someone else's house in the UK

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-6 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T will write "Going to Dinner" on the WB and wants the Ss work in pairs and ask 1. Do you eat dinner outside? Where do you eat? In a restaurant or in your friend's house? and answer these questions in a limited time. T-S task feedback (elicit a few ideas)

Pre-Reading/Listening (7-8 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

T will give out the H0s, the Ss match the words with the pictures. When the Ss are done, elicit and give meaning of the unknown words by showing examples and using verbal explanation.Focus on the pronunciation of dessert and desert, and also guest.

Pre-Reading/Listening#2 (4-5 minutes) • to prepare the Ss for the context of the listening

The Ss discuss the questions in groups of for for 3-4 minutes. Ask the Ss to share interesting answers with the class.

Pre-Reading/Listening#3 (5-6 minutes) • To prepare the Ss for the listening task

Try to elicit the words "rude and polite" by demonstrating and giving examples, "on time-in time, leave-arrive, earn" by using verbal explanations to prepare the Ss for the T/F activity. Ss imagine that they are invited to someone's house for dinner in the UK. They read the sentences from 1 to 8 and think which ones are true, which ones are false. They compare the answers in groups. Check answers with the class.

Gist Listening (2-4 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist listening

Ss listen to the conversation between two friends. Ask them to find out what it is about. Elicit "advice".

Detailed Listening (4-5 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed listening

Ss listen to the conversation again to check if their answers to the T/F activity match with the answers in the conversation and they tick the true ones. Sentence 6 is true, all the others are false. WCF

Detailed Listening (5-6 minutes) • To provide Ss with challenging specific information listening

Ss listen to the conversation for the last time to answer the questions. They check their answers with their partners. Give feedback on the WB or give the answer key.

Post-Reading/Listening (4-5 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

In pairs, Ss will discuss the similarities and the differences between the UK and Turkey on the topic of going out for dinner. WCF on task Delayed error correction
