Description

In this lesson students work on speaking and listening relating to beauty and transformation. Students review the present perfect versus the past simple.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To enable students to practice speaking for fluency in the context of a discussion of beauty trends and transformation.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To enable students to practice listening for gist and detail in the context of audio file about beauty trends and transformation.
  • To enable students to extend their lexical range in the context of beauty trends and transformation.
  • To enable students to review the present perfect versus the past simple.

Procedure

Welcome (5-10 minutes) • To welcome students to class and to troubleshoot any problems.

T welcomes Ss to class. T asks how Ss are, if they have any questions or concerns about the course materials, platforms, etc. T and Ss chat informally as all Ss arrive to Teams platform.

Review (15-20 minutes) • To review what we covered in last class and to begin setting the context for today's lesson

T gets Ss attention. T nominates S: “what did we work on in last Saturday’s class?” - we worked with vocabulary relating to reinventing oneself - We listened to audio of an image consultant talking about a band who wanted to change their images for a music video - We played ‘Celebrity’ T nominates S: “did we have any work suggested for self-study?” - yes, Grammar reference 4.1 on p. 143 T: “Did anyone have a chance to have a look it?” [If no, T: “Okay, let's look at it together!'] [T leads Ss through checking answers OR sends them to groups to work on exercise.] T leads Ss in pronunciation drill of words from last class [fringe, pirate, fatter, muscle]

Warmer/Lead-in (5-7 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T gest Ss attention. T asks Ss to watch video: “Women speak out against skin lightening - BBC News” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e-SI0lDO5q4 T: "What do you think about the idea of skin lightening?"

Pre-Reading/Listening (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

T gets Ss attention. T shares screen with slide 6. T instructs Ss: we're going to work in small groups to look at the images and discuss the following questions for 5 minutes. T nominates Ss to read the Qs out loud. 1. What products do you think they are advertising? 2. What country do you think they are from? 3. Do you think they are good ads? Why or why not? ICQ: are we working individually? [no, in groups] ICQ: how many minutes are we taking to discuss? [5 minutes] T assigns Ss partners and directs them to channels. T monitors channels and makes notes for feedback & DEC. T calls Ss back to main session. T nominates Ss to share their ideas in OCF.

While-Listening 1 (6-8 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

T gets Ss attention. T shows slide 7 and nominates S to read the instructions: "Listen to two friends discussing ideas about beauty. Were your answers in 1 & 2 correct?" T plays audio 4.3. T asks S if their answers were correct.

While-Listening 2 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

T gets Ss attention. T shows slide 8 and asks Ss to listen again and complete the sentences. T plays audio twice. T asks Ss to work in small groups or pair to check answers for 5 minutes. T assigns groups/pairs. ICQ: are we working individually? [no, in pairs/groups] ICQ: how many minutes are we taking to discuss? [5 minutes] T assigns Ss partners and directs them to channels. T monitors channels and makes notes for feedback & DEC. T calls Ss back to main session. T nominates Ss to share their answers in OCF.

Post-Reading/Listening (10-15 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

T gets Ss attention. T shows slide 9 and nominates S to read instructions: "Work in groups. Discuss the questions: 1. What does the audio tell you about concepts of beauty in different cultures? 2. What other aspects of beauty/appearance can you think of that are different between cultures?" T assigns groups. ICQ: are we working in pairs? [no groups] ICQ: how many minutes do we have? [8 minutes] T assigns Ss to channels. T monitors channels and takes notes for feedback/DEC. T calls them back and discusses their ideas in open class feedback.

Guided Discovery/Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

T gets Ss attention. T shows slides 10-12. T asks Ss to work as a group to choose the correct words to clarify the grammar. T assigns groups/pairs. ICQ: are we working in pairs? [yes, or group of 3] ICQ: how many minutes do we have? [5 minutes] T assigns Ss to channels. T monitors channels and takes notes for feedback/DEC. T calls them back and goes over their answers in open class feedback, using slide as a whiteboard.

Controlled Practice (10-12 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

T gets Ss attention. T asks Ss to work with a partner for 5 minutes to complete p.41 #2 (slide 13 ) T assigns partners. ICQ: Are we working in groups? [no, in pairs] ICQ: how many minutes do we have? [5 minutes] T sends pairs to channels. T monitors and takes note of language for feedback and DEC. T calls Ss back to main session. T nominates Ss to share their answers in OCF.

Freer Practice (12-14 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

T gets Ss attention. T asks Ss to take 5 minutes to write 5 sentences (p.41 #3a - slide 14) Ss write their sentences. T asks Ss to now work with a partner for 5 minutes to compare their sentences. T assigns partners. ICQ: Are we working in groups? [no, in pairs] ICQ: how many minutes do we have? [5 minutes] T sends pairs to channels. T monitors and takes note of language for feedback and DEC. T calls Ss back to main session. T nominates Ss to share their answers in OCF.
