Procedure (42-57 minutes)
Show Ss a newspaper and elicit from them news and headlines. Ss look at some newspaper headlines and say what they are and discuss in pairs what the story is for each of the headlines.
Ss match the photo cards with the headline cards. Ss check in pairs, followed by WC feedback. Get Ss to notice the way of writing headlines, eg. abbreviated form, short punchy words, lack of articles, use of the present simple, use of to instead of going to.Ask Ss why headlines are written in that way.
Clarify the meaning of the new vocabularies, such as, row, quit, cash , probe, hit, bar, soar, octogenarian, wedding, by eliciting and giving examples. Ask CQs. Drill pronunciation. Ss talk in pairs about the story of each item. Ss talk about which one they would read first. Ss match the underlined headlines with the phrases.ex.1. Ss check in pairs, followed by WC feedback.
Ss listen to CD track 2.22 and match the radio news items with the headlines. Ss chek in pairs , followed by WC feedback.
Ss work in groups to write a radio news story based on one of the three headlines (a-c), invent any extra information they need.Then, broadcast their news to the rest of the class.
Get Ss to work in their groups to make their own newspaper, choosing a name , writing some different headlines about different topics, and write some stories about the headlines.
