Description

In this lesson, the students learn vocabulary in the context of people around you.

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification, review and practice of different names of relationships in the context of people around you

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide specific information listening practice using a text about different names of relationships in the context of people around you
  • To provide accuracy speaking practice in a discussion in the context of people around you

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-7 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

*Greet the students and ask them how was their week. *Turn off the light and show the students a PowerPoint slides that contains several questions. *Ask the students : -Are you a social person? -Do you know a lot of people? -What kind of people do you have? -Now think of one person you know and mention his/her name and what's his/her relation to you? *Elicit some answers from them.

Test #1 (8-10 minutes) • To gauge students' prior knowledge of the target language

*Give the students a handout that contains the first activity and ask them to read the words in the box and to write each word in the correct category in the other box below. *Demonstrate the first one with them. *Students start to write each word in the correct category. *Teacher monitors and notes down the words that they don't know to focus on it on the teach stage. *Ask students to check their answers in pairs. *Give the students oral feedback. *Ask students 'Can you add any other words to each category?' *Discourage students to use words that is too simple (mother, father.etc). *Elicit some answers from them.

Teach (12-15 minutes) • To clarify areas of the target language where students had difficulty in the first test stage

*Ask the students CCQs to check their understanding of the new words. *Drill the words for the students first then let them repeat in groups and individually. *Write the words on the board and show the stress on each word.

Test #2 (13-15 minutes) • Check students' use of the target language again and compare with the first test

*Tell the students that they're going to listen to an audio with particular instructions and they've to listen and write the answers in the shapes. *Play the audio for the first instructions and role a model for them. *Ask ICQ: Are you going to choose a particular shape? (No, any shape) *The students start to listen. *Pause after each instruction to give them time to think and write. *Ask the students to exchange their handouts and start asking each other about the names and numbers. *Give the students feedback by correcting their mistakes.

Controlled practice (5-6 minutes) • to concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

*Divide the students into two teams and ask a volunteer or pick a student from every team and let them set on a chair with their backs to the board. *Write on the board a word and ask his/her team to describe the word for him/her without saying the word itself and if the student's team says it by mistake, his/her team loses a point and the team that gets more points wins. *Ask ICQ:Are you going to say the word itself? (no) *Teacher writes the words on the board and the Students start the play. *Teacher provides help if needed. *Give the feedback by praising the good work and declare the winning team.

Free practice (13-15 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

*Ask the students to switch on their phones and choose three pictures for people they know and speak with your friend about them and they should use the target language, not just names. *Give the students time to prepare. *Ask ICQ: Are you going to say names or titles? (Both) *The students start telling their partners about the pictures. *Teacher monitors and notes down any mistakes. *Give feedback by correcting their mistakes. *Praise any good use of the target language.
