Main Aims

  • To provide clarification of comparatives and modifiers in the context of cities in the world

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of cities in Turkey

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Students describe and compare the cities from the pictures shown. This will engage the students as well as set the context for the lesson.

Test/Practice/Review (8-10 minutes) • To gauge students' prior knowledge of the target language

For the Test (Practice) activity I will give the students an exercise in which the sentences will be in their incorrect form and I will ask them to correct them. I will tell the students that we are going to look at sentences about these cities, but there is something wrong with these sentences. Please correct these sentences. Then I will ask the students to do exercise two, which asks them to find the comparative forms based on exercise 1. Then I will pass out an answer key and as I am monitoring during the activity I will be able to determine if I need to teach comparatives as well as modifiers or just modifiers. I will pick out a couple questions that I noticed the students struggling with and we will go over them.

Teach (15-20 minutes) • To clarify areas of the target language where students had difficulty in the first test stage

If I notice that the students did not learn or forgot comparative forms, I will teach them along with their use. I will put a sentence from the activity on the board and I will ask them what the comparative in the sentence is. Then I will ask them if there is a big or a small difference between the two and how do they know. I will ask them,"Which word in this sentence tells you that?" Then hopefully they will point to the modifier. I will then clarify the language. I will put a Cline on the board and ask the students where the words, slightly, a little, far, and much will go in relation to their difference.

Meaningful Practice • Gap fill exercise to get the students to write that target language

The students will be given an activity where they will be asked to fill in the blanks. I will check to see if the students are using the correct form of the comparatives as well as the modifiers.

Free practice (13-15 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

I will pair the students and ask them to compare the cities which they are from which each other. I will ask them whose city is bigger? Whose city is more modern? Whose city is more crowded?

Feedback and Error Correction (8-10 minutes) • Check students' use of the target language again and compare with the first test

I will have feedback and ask the students where there partner was trying to sell them in Turkey. I will pick apart some sentences I heard during the freer practice and do an error correction
