Upper-Intermediate level
Description
Materials
Main Aims
-
To expose students to causative verbs and give them opportunity to practice them in a variety of ways.
Subsidiary Aims
-
To provide students with an opportunity to discuss a controversial topic and reinforce functional language for agreement/disagreement/turn-taking, etc.
Procedure (39-49 minutes)
S's are asked to discuss the following question with their partners: Should people be allowed to hunt animals? This question ties into a lesson earlier this week.
Teacher asks for some of the students ideas from the lead-in and writes appropriate ones on the whiteboard. If necessary, he will alter some to make sure they include causative verbs. He will ask students some questions to gauge their understanding of the grammar. Then, he will show them some similar statement pairs - one set giving advice, the other with a causative - on PowerPoint and ask S's to compare both sets of statements. Finally, teacher will highlight the target grammar.
Using PowerPoint, T will highlight each of the target verb constructions, usage rules, and example sentences. As there are discussion questions included throughout the prepared PPT, S's will have chances to discuss with their partners at various points.
S's will play a Kahoot quiz for controlled practice and assessment.
S's will work with their partners to complete sentences using the causative verbs to answer questions based on the lesson theme. T will spot check throughout the activity. The T will ask some pairs to share some of their answers.
