Description

In this lesson, students begin with a reading about promises and through that will become familiar with the meaning of "will" which deals with making promises and offers to people.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of future form "will" to signify promises and offers in the context of everyday decisions and promises

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide gist reading practice using a text about promises in the context of everyday decisions and promises

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

-The teacher tells the class a story about a time he has made a promise and elicits the word "promise" from the students.

Exposure (15-20 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

-The teacher writes some words on the board and asks students to work alone and to match the words to their meanings in exercise C. -The students have to check their answers with a partner. -The teacher writes the number of the answers next to the words on the board and the students check their answers against that. -The teacher elicits the meanings of words in exercise A of pronunciation and asks the students to mark the stress on the words. -The teacher writes the four words which have their stress on the second syllable on the board and marks their stress and drills them. -The teacher asks the students to read the text and match the headlines with the correct paragraph. The teacher will have a WC FB.

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

-The teacher forms pairs in the class. -The teacher asks the pairs to look at the headlines in exercise A and find the word that is repeated in all the sentences. -The teacher has whole class feedback.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

-The teacher hands out the guided discovery sheet and asks students to work alone and answer the first part. Later they have to work in pairs and check together. -The teacher later hands out the answer key and makes sure the students check their answers. -Then the teacher asks the students to do the second and third part alone and later check their answers with a partner. -The students will later look at their answer key and make sure they have the right answers.

Controlled Practice #1 (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

-The teacher asks the students to part b of the grammar exercise on page 33 and to check their answers with a partner. -The teacher asks a student who has done the exercise correctly to read it to the class. -The teacher asks the students to match the sentences they have completed with the pictures in exercise a. -The teacher forms groups of four and asks the students to do exercise c. -He writes the answer on the board.

Controlled Practice #2 (10-12 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

-The teacher elicits the meaning of the words in part b of the vocabulary exercise 4 to make sure students are ready for the next exercise. -The teacher asks the students to do exercise b and later check their answers with their partner. -The teacher asks the students to listen and check their answers.

Semi-Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

-The teacher gives the proper instructions to the students and to make sure the students understand what to do, he does one himself. -The teacher asks the students to stand up and to mingle and read their prompts to another student and write down their response. -The teacher monitors closely and writes down the mistakes he hears for a delayed feedback. -The teacher writes down some of the mistakes he has heard on the board and asks the class to correct them.
