To provide listening practice to identify stress patterns in the target lexis
Procedure (38-45 minutes)
To introduce the topic area to activate the students' knowledge, show the target vocabulary picture card and elicit the words to see what language they already know. Convey the meaning of the word. Put the pictures in their correct places ( the places are live, work and go which will be elicited) and ask " Why are they in different places?".
After eliciting, model the pronunciation ( including syllables and stress). give the written forms and Show the picture ( Straightforward Beginner Student's Book, 5A, 1.73, pg 42) ask "Where is he? What can you see? " to prepare them for the further listening.
Students listen to the recording (Straightforward Beginner Student's Book, 5A, 1.73, pg 42) and repeat the sentences. T focuses on the collocations by drilling as she divides the sentences and refers the WB.(eg. live in, live in New York, I live in New York)
T takes out some of the words from the WB, gives them to the students. Students work in pairs, one by one they come to the board, stick the word on the correct place and makes the sentence by using the first person I. T tries to elicit the question "Do you....?" by pointing herself and the table on the WB. Once she elicits she writes the questions on the board to prepare the students for the final activity.
Students play Find Someone Who game by using the language they have just learnt. They stand up, ask the other students the question on the paper and write down their names. When they are ready, t asks " Who goes to work by car?, Who lives in a flat? Who works for a big company?"...etc to check their answers.
T corrects the errors which the students made during the activity.
