  • To provide clarification of the past simple and past continuous in the context of previous experience

  • To provide accuracy speaking in the context of past experiences

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

-I'll tell them a story about myself and try to use past continuous and past simple. -Ask them to talk about their stories.(what happened last night?)

clarification (6-8 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

-I'm going to make different examples with past simple and past continuous . -"I was watching TV, suddenly my mobile phone rang." -CCQs: *Are we talking about the past? Yes *What is the tense? P.C and P.S -I will write the sentence on the board and draw timeline -P.C: background information -P.S: main events -I try to have color coding -Drill pronunciation orally and individually -Ask them to make example

Controlled Practice (3-4 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

-I'll give them the instruction: Read exercise 6 and answer the questions -ICQs: *Are you going to talk? No *Are you going to do individually or in pairs? Individually -Pair check -Feedback -We will read the RULES with each other

Semi-controlled practice (7-9 minutes) • To concept check further and and prepare students for activation part

-I'll give them the instruction: -Instead of ICQs, I'll do the first one as example -Pair check -Feedback( I will play the audio) -I ask them listen again and notice how was and were are pronounced

Activation (7-9 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

-I'll give them the instruction: -Instead of ICQ, I'll do the first one as example -I'll put them in pairs/groups and ask them to talk about the sentences in their books in exercise 9 -Delayed error correction (if necessary) -Feedback

Freer Practice (7-9 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

-I'll put them in pairs/groups and ask them to write what happened on their trip or journey -They should use past simple and past continuous -At the end they can stand up and talk about their story and they can choose the the most interesting story
