Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide review and practice of indirect and direct reported speech.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To give Ss writing experience.
  • To give Ss experience in using reported speech from an anecdote.
  • To minimize TTT and engage the Ss.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will show Ss a video from a British sketch comedy on people's phobias (~2.30). After watching, I will have a quick discussion by asking what their phobias are, in a reported speech format.

Pre-Reading/Listening (15-15 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

T will show Ss a slate of slides discussing indirect vs. direct reported speech, reported clauses and sample reported verbs.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (5-8 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

Ss will listen to a brief audio in which Christie discusses her problems sleeping. Students will be asked to report back on the audio by answering the following prompts: What did Christie say about she really needs? Where does Christie have trouble sleeping? What did Christie do to try and sleep? Why was Christie exhausted?

While-Reading/Listening #2 (15-20 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed grammar exercise.

Ss will spend five minutes to write a quick anecdote about their first kiss, most recent dream, what they wanted to be when they grew up, or their first party. Ss will then share their story with their partner and vice versa. Ss will be asked to report back to the group using both indirect and direct reported speech.

DEC (5-5 minutes) • To provide Ss with an opportunity to learn from their mistakes.

Ss will be given feedback on their prompts, and asked if they have any questions about using reported speech.
