Main Aims

Procedure

Lead-In (3-5 minutes) • to introduce the lesson and engage the students in the topic

- T asks the students to talk about what they are doing right now Instructions: "What are you doing right now? List as many things as you can" - T demos the task and writes down the example on the slide: "I am sitting in a chair. I am drinking tea. I am looking at my computer. I am talking to you. I am wearing glasses." - depending on the number of students, T either puts them in breakout rooms or nominates students to answer the question

Presentation Through Text (5-7 minutes) • to provide context for the target language through a text

- T asks students to read the text and say what the messages have in common Instructions: "Read the text. What do the messages have in common? " - students read the text (1 min) - T nominates a student to answer the question - T asks follow up questions/ questions to prompt students' answers: "are they talking about something that is happening now or usually?"

Clarification (10-15 minutes) • to clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the verbs in the present continuous tense

- T displays a Jamboard slide - T elicits the form and the use of present continuous (2 slides) - T clarifies the form and use of present continuous - T asks CCQs CCQs: "do we use present continuous to talk about something that happens every day?" (no) "do we use present continuous to talk about something that is happening right now?" (yes) "do we use the expression 'at the moment' with present continuous?" (yes) - T displays the slide with the spelling rules - T elicits the rules from the spelling rules students - T clarifies the spelling exceptions to the students - T asks CCQs: CCQs: "if a word ends with -e, do you keep the -e?" (no) "if a word ends with -e, do you remove it?" (yes) - T displays a slide with examples - T practices pronunciation of the examples through choral repetition with the students

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • to concept check and let the students practice using the present continuous tense

- T sends the link to the exercise in the chat - T shares the screen - T gives instructions: “Read the sentences and fill in the missing space using the correct verb in present continuous tense." - T demos the task, using the first question as an example - T put students into breakout rooms - T conducts OCFB

Freer Practice (8-15 minutes) • to provide students with practice of the present continuous tense

- T shows a slide with a picture and also sends the picture in the chat - T gives instructions: Instructions: "I will send you back into breakout rooms. Describe what is happening in the picture. List as many examples as possible” - T demos the task - T puts students into breakout rooms and monitors the breakout rooms

Feedback (3-5 minutes) • to provide feedback on students’ production and use of language

- T provides OCFB - T writes on the whiteboard some samples of correct and incorrect sentences observed in the breakout rooms - T elicits from students whether each sample has any errors and the corrections
