Hibernating Animals
Main Aims
-
To provide clarification and practice of hibernating animals
Subsidiary Aims
-
To provide accuracy and fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of hibernating animals
Procedure (30-30 minutes)
T draws Ss' attention to the outer world and takes them to the side of the window to talk about what kinds of changes they observe in wintertime. T guides the disccussion by directing questions such as "Do you think it is cold outside?", "Do you see birds in the sky?", "Do people wear the same clothes as in summer?", "What do we to stay warm during winter?", "Do you think animals prepare for winter?", "What do animals do in wintertime?". T elicits the answers and sets a scene to activate the previous knowledge of Ss about hibernation. T draws a big H on the board, writes "Hibernation" and sticks a bear picture under the letter. T says "A bear hibernates in winter" and wants Ss to make guesses about the meaning of hibernation.
T wants Ss to make a circle and settles them down.T makes a transition to presentation stage by saying "Let's look at some hibernating animals!" and shows the flashcards designed as a book. For example, T shows the picture and says "Bats hibarnate." and makes Ss repeat this sentence. T checks the understanding by asking "Do bats sleep in winter?", "What do bats eat in winter?" and "Do bats sleep all year long?". T repeats the same pattern for the remaining animals that hibernate. After completing this, T shows another book that shows the places where animals hibernate. Ss answer the questions directed by T. T says that it is a song time and show the video with a hibernation song. T wants Ss to find the hibernating animals that they don't talk the in the first stage. So, Ss have the purpose for the first listening. In the second listening, T acts out the song and wants Ss to stand up, sing it together. Ss learn the new words through an enjoyable activity.
T places the cards that have the pictures of animals on the ground. Ss randomly select one of these cards and decide whether the animal hibernates or not. T provides extra questions to provide deeper understanding into the concept: "Do elephants hibernate?", "Do you know why?" etc.Through this way, T and Ss talk about the hibernation process and what kind of changes animals go under during this process.
