Description

In this lesson ss learn about the layout and language needed for writing a formal letter including the words and, but and also. They do a guided discovery task on the layout of the letter followed by M(A)FP. They write their own formal letter and check afterwards they check their peers work through a google form checklist

Materials

Main Aims

  • To introduce and provide practice of formal writing using the conjunctions and, but also.

Subsidiary Aims

  • Ss are introduced to new vocabulary related to the task

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (4-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Ss click the link for S1 of an image of a letter, they go to break out rooms and discuss same for 3 minutes. Topic 'what letters do you write?'

Text analysis of the layout of the letter (3-4 minutes) • To provide a sample of a formal letter which is the expected task

Ss analyze the layout of the sample letter in pairs. Through guided discovery they match the numbers to the letters which are the different parts of the letter.

Useful Language (5-6 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

M(A)FP of the conjugations and, but, also. Google slides 5 - 7

Productive Task. Ss write a formal letter (18-20 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

Ss write a formal letter in reply to an advertisement for a group leader in a summer camp. They use the sample letter on Google slide 2

Ss correct their formal letters. Open class feedback and Error Correction (8-10 minutes) • Ss give each other feedback on their formal letters

Ss click on the link for Google forms to use the checklist so that they can correct their classmate's work. Afterwards they go to breakout rooms to discuss same. Finally OCFB and DEC
