Subsidiary Aims
-
To provide gist reading practice using a text about dialogue in the context of uncertainty over what was seen.
Procedure (32-45 minutes)
The students will be shown pictures of spacecraft and other space related things. They will then be asked if they have heard of any strange sightings in their country.
I will put the students in breaker rooms. They will read the dialogue between the two scientists. They will then debate one another to decide if the scientists should report what they saw. Also, they will have to explain why they think they should or shouldn't report it to their superiors.
I will have three sentences using modal verbs that show certainty or uncertainty. I will ask CCQ's to explain meaning. I will also use a diagram and put different modal verbs of uncertainty and certainty on either side to familiarize them. I will review the form and the pronunciation after.
I will send the students a link to a google form. There they will answer questions as to whether they think the sentence is certain in its meaning, or just something that they think is possible. They will fill out the form. We will review once back from breaker rooms.
Students will be put into breaker rooms to discuss the following questions. In their discussion they will have to use modal verbs to explain if they were certain or not in each situation. What might you have seen, that you are unsure of? When were you unsure to report a problem? How did you know what you wanted to study in university?
