Description

This is a Text-based lesson using lexis as the main lesson goal. Ss will focus on collocations of verbs + prepositions and their correct utilisations.

Main Aims

  • To introduce, clarify and practice about social media usage and its main obstacles

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide gist listening using a text regarding social media implications and controlled practiced over verb + prepositions collocations

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (1-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T introduce statements on a presentation: Read the facts about social media and decide if they are true or false: The average Facebook user has between 50 and 100 Facebook friends. Facebook is older than LinkedIn Twitter started as a simple text service T elicits a few ideas from learners. 1 minute - Learners work in pairs in breakout rooms and discuss. 1 minute T conducts OCFB and provides the answers. 2 to 3 minutes maximum

Exposure (6-7 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

The class listens a text about social media implications T gives link to a Jamboard presentation, in there is an activity with sentences Ss had previously listened. Learners need to select the correct preposition. Instructions: Complete the sentences from the text with the correct preposition: T makes a demonstration by completing one example Ss answer individually first 1 minute Learners then share their answers in teams using Breakout rooms 2 minutes T conducts OCFB 5 to 7 minutes maximum

Clarification (7-8 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Ss have to answer 3 fundamental questions about verbs + prepositions that are guided to discover the rules of the target language. These questions include aspects of meaning and form of the target language Teacher sets hints and clues to obtain the correct information Ss elicit the answers During class feedback, T checks the students’ understanding of the meaning of the target language (using Concept Checking Questions), elicits the form, as well as drills the pronunciation (chorally and individually, if necessary) to ensure the students know how to say the structures and any contractions Verb + preposition: consist of, think of, dream of, belong to, happen to, keep in, believe in, depend on, work for

Controlled Practice (5-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Instructions: Complete the sentences using the correct form of the verb + preposition Instructor answers 1 as a demonstration Learners answer individually 1 minute Check answers in pairs in Breakout rooms for 2 minutes T conducts OCFB 4 to 6 minutes maximum

Free Practice (10-15 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Instructions: In teams, answer these questions: In what extent do you use social media (e.g. email, Facebook, Whatssap)? Are you ‘too dependable’ for using social networks? Do you know any strategies to spend less time in social media? Learners work in pairs and discuss for 4 minutes. Learners share their answers for the whole class. 4 minutes While they are speaking, T monitors, is available to help and make a note of any errors T conducts OCFB Conduct feedback on the task Delayed Error Correction (DEC)
