Speaking Lesson
Upper Intermediate level

Description

In this lesson, the students will practice speaking in the context of speaking about their favorite song. They will also learn vocabulary related to the topic. The lesson starts with a lead-in and then the learners are introduced to the topic related vocabulary. This will be followed by content preparation and speaking task in which the students will discuss the topic in the Breakout Rooms. This will be followed by feedback and Delayed Error Correction.

Main Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a Conversation in the context of favorite song.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide practice of music vocabulary in the context of favorite song.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (4-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students.

Display names of famous singers and ask them to name a song sung by these singers. 1. Espinoza Paz 2. J Balvin 3. Shakira 4. Enrique Iglesias 5. Louis Fonsi 6. Selena Gomez 7. Daddy Yankee 8. Karol G 9. Becky G

Content Preparation (8-10 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through reading.

Students are asked to read the article 'Music to my Ears" for 3-4 minutes. Then they are asked the following questions: 1. What does the author do even now when she hear Chuck Berry's songs? 2.Whom did she listen to almost every day after school? The answers are elicited from the students by OCFB. AK: 1. Language Preparation (5-6 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

Show the following vocabulary related to music and check their knowledge by CCQs. Types of music: 1. Jazz 2. Blues 3. Soul 4.Pop Song Vocabulary: 1. Lyrics 2. Melody 3. Artist 4. Catchy Tune 5.Tempo If students need clarification on the MFP, they will be explained in detail.

Productive Task(s) (15-16 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

Students are asked the following questions: Which is your favorite song? Who is/are the singer/singers? How often do you hear it? What type of song is it? (the type of music) Why do you like it? Would you recommend it to your friend? Why? The students are sent to the Breakout Rooms to discuss the answers.

Feedback (2-3 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

The teacher elicits the answers from the students.

Delayed Error Correction (2-3 minutes) • To reinforce knowledge and clear any doubts.

The teacher actively monitors the students during the productive task and give feedbacks to students.
