Speaking about the movies
Elementary, A1 level

Description

In this lesson, students learn about the types of films through some pictures of films and they speak about the films. The lesson starts with a lead in question asked by the teacher to the whole class about the last film they watched. This is followed by teaching vocabulary about the types of films. Then, a questionnaire about films is given to the the Ss to be completed. After talking about their answers in the questionnaire, the Ss are given a dialogue to read and to change the necessary parts of it to make a dialogue about films in a semi-controlled way. Finally, they are asked to make a dialogue in a freer way and a delayed feedback is given at the end of the lesson.

Main Aims

  • By the end of the lesson, students will be able to speak and make a conversation in the context of the types of films.

Subsidiary Aims

  • By the end of the lesson, students will be able to learn the types of films and use them while speaking correctly.

Procedure

Lead-in (3-4 minutes) • To make Ss become familiar with the context of the lesson.

T starts playing a soundtrack before the class. After greeting the Ss, T tells Ss "I watched a film yesterday at home. Can you guess which film it is?" -Music and Lyrics Then, she asks Ss two questions "When did you last go to the cinema?", "What film did you see?" and wants them to speak in pairs. After Ss finish speaking, T asks each student to talk about the answers of their friends: "When did your friend last go to the cinema?", "What film did s/he see?"

Presenting Vocabulary (7-9 minutes) • To enable the Ss to learn vocabulary which is not clear to them.

T shows some pictures of films to the Ss to elicit some vocabulary which constitutes the context of the lesson. These words are "romantic film, horror film, drama, animated film, musical, action film, comedy, sci-fi film" The teacher asks "Do you know this film?" "What type of film is it?" "How do you feel while watching this film?" for each film. She asks appropriate CCQs, drills and writes these words on the board.

Practising Vocabulary (4-6 minutes) • To enable the students to practice more using the vocabulary they have learned

T has some HOs in her hand and asks Ss to work alone and complete the sentences with the types of film. ICQs: "Are you going to write sentences or complete the sentences?" "Are you working alone or with your partners?" Then, teacher gives the HOs to the students. When they finish completing the sentences, T asks them to compare thir answers in pairs. Finally, she gives them the AK.

Semi-controlled speaking practice (a questionnaire) (10-12 minutes) • To enable the students to speak abut the films in a semi-controlled way.

T has some handouts in her hand and asks Ss to work in pairs. She explains, "There are nine questions here. First of all, look at the questions and try to answer them alone. You may take notes if you want. Then, ask these questions to each other and take notes." T asks and answers one or two questions as an example. After the pairs finish speaking, T switches the pairs to give Ss more opportunities for interaction. T monitors Ss while they are speaking and provides on the spot correction. After all Ss finish the activity, T asks the questions about different Ss and wants their friends to give answer as they have learned about their friends. For ex: T asks "What's Bekir's favourite film?" and Derya answers "His favourite film is......"

Matching questions with answers (3-4 minutes) • To make Ss become familiar with the essential questions in the conversation.

T has some cut-ups in her hand ans asks Ss to work in pairs. She wants them to match the questions with the answers. She gives the cut-ups to the pairs. After they finish, T asks them to compare their answers with the other pair. Then the AK is given to Ss.

Reading a conversation about a film (4-5 minutes) • To make the students become familiarized with the conversation.

T has some handouts in her hand and asks Ss to work in pairs and read the conversation written on the handout twice changing roles. She gives the handouts to Ss and they read the conversation twice changing roles.

Semi-controlled speaking practice (a conversation) (5-7 minutes) • To make the students build a conversation with their partners in a semi-controlled way.

T says "Look at the handouts. You will see some parts are underlined in the conversation. Work in pairs and change these underlined parts to make a new conversation." Ss work on the parts they are going to change for two minutes. T monitors and gives suggestions about the films to Ss if needed. When SS finish making necessary changes, T says "Now make conversations with your partners and try not to read."

Freer speaking practise (6-8 minutes) • To make students speak in a freer way

T switches the pairs to give Ss more opportunities for interaction in a freer way. T asks Ss to make conversations with new partners and talk about films. T monitors Ss at this stage and takes notes about the errors they make.

Delayed Feedback (3-5 minutes) • To enable students to see the errors they've made

T writes some sentences on the board. These are the sentences said by Ss and they have some errors. T says "Work in pairs and try to find the errors in these sentences." After Ss finish discussing, T asks Ss what they think about the errors in the sentences and makes necessary corrections on the board.
