Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of Present perfect in the context of Life stories.

Subsidiary Aims

  • Review of past participant verbs and practice contracted form of Have.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (2-4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I show the students a PowerPoint which includes my pictures in some places, and ask them a couple of questions like" Do you know her? , Do you know the exact time? , Is this in the past, present or future?, Is this such an experience in my life?".

Exposure (4-6 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

I tell them the sentence about my picture " I have been to shiraz." Then ask them " Do you know the exact time?" The obvious answer in NO. And show them the other picture and tell them " I have lived in Tehran." Is this such an experience in my life?

Highlighting (4-6 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

1- How is the present perfect formed? Elicit the answer from students. Write the form on the board and ask students to discuss if this is correct or not. 2- Give them some verbs and ask them to tell me the p.p.

Clarification (5-8 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

In this stage we talk about the usage of the grammar e.g. When do you use the present perfect? ( when we do not know the exact time, When that event is such an experience in our life.) Practice the pronunciation of "have" in the contracted form. Ask them to drill. Change the words like " She, London, They, read a novel,..."

Controlled Practice (3-6 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

I show them some scramble sentences and want them to unscramble them in pair groups ICQ (What's the job?)

Semi-Controlled Practice (4-7 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

Show them pictures with 2 words below them. Then ask them to make sentences in pair groups. ICQ (What are you going to do?)

Free Practice (5-8 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

In this stage I want them to write some sentences about their personal life or about their family which don't include the exact time, or those are some experiences, individually. Then they have to check their answers with their friends. ICQ ( What should you do?)
