Description

In this lesson, students will be writing an informal email to a friend/family member who they have not seen since the start of the pandemic. They will be inviting them to a future event they are planning.

Main Aims

  • To provide process and product writing practice of a informal e-mail in the context of a friend who you haven't seen since COVID lockdowns

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide deduction reading practice using a text about updating a friend/family member and inviting them to an event in the context of an informal e-mails

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Introduce the lesson by presenting a few pictures of activities and friends gathering around. Ask them what they think these pictures are about. Hint towards life before COVID and ask them if they meet with their friends virtually now? Ask them if they have friends they haven't seen in a while.

Exposure (6-7 minutes) • To get the students to look at a written model

Show the ST's an incorrect model of an informal email. They will have to read the email and correct the grammar and punctuation mistakes. (2 min) They will check with partners for answers (2 min) OCFB for corrections. (2 min)

Pre-Writing (7-8 minutes) • To engage students in the context and get them thinking about informal emails

T will present the correct model to them with their corrections on it. T will then present a Google Forms which will ask ST's to analyze the model and answer questions regarding the structure of the e-mail. It will include questions about what is in paragraph 1, paragraph 2, and paragraph 3. ST's will also have to answer if they know what kind of style of writing this is and list phrases or words which signify informal words or phrases. (3 min) They will check with their peers (2 min) OCFB (3 min)

Useful Language (5-5 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

T will present a google doc to them with some informal phrases they can include in their emails. They will be asked to put more statements on there. (3 min) Informal Greetings: Hey, Hi, etc... Informal Phrases: How've you been doing? What's up? Informal Closing Statements: See you later, Lookin forward to see you soon OCFB (2 min)

Writing Task (12-13 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

ST's will be asked to write their own email to a friend they have not seen since Covid-19 lockdown and invite them to an online event such as a Zoom Meeting or Netflix movie night or an event in the future. They will have to follow the model format which was discussed in the Pre-Writing task. Must include a P.S. statement.

Feedback and Error Correction (6-8 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

During this task, ST's will be presented with a feedback checklist. They will grade each other's responses for the checklist. (3 min) There will be OCFB afterward regarding their peer feedback. (2 min) DEC will be presented for any mistakes which were made. (3 min)
