In this speaking lesson students will reinforce speaking skill in the context of Special days, the TL language focus comes from Face2Face (A1-A2) coursebook.

Main Aims

  • To introduce and provide practice of speaking for fluency in the context of special days

Subsidiary Aims

  • Learners will review vocabulary they may know for important days.Learners will have also practiced some reading while doing speaking activities

Procedure

Lead-in (5-7 minutes) • To engage learners and activate their previous knowledge of topic area

- Teacher displays slide virtual background (VB): Nominate 1 st and ask: What special days do you celebrate? - Let students tell you possible answers. o Write answers on the WB/screen (Slide 1) - Cue students to tell you, what gifts they give on birthday celebrations. - Send SS to BoR to share answers - Return and share answers (Slide 2)

Preparation (8-12 minutes) • To prepare students to talk.

- Ask SS about their birthdays. o Say “Your teacher’s birthday is next month…” - Show students the conversation in Slide 3 - Tell SS to read quickly and complete the conversation - Help students complete the conversation - Go to Slide 4 go over MPA - Cue the students on the function questions What about an MP3 player? /wɒt əˈbaʊt ən ɛm-piː3 ˈpleɪə?/ CCQ: Is this a question or an affirmation? (a question) CCQ: Is the question recommending a gift? (yes) CCQ: Is this a formal question, an informal question or neutral? (neutral) Why don’t we get him a book? /waɪ dəʊnt wiː gɛt hɪm ə bʊk?/ CCQ: Is this a question or an affirmation? (a question) CCQ: Is the question recommending a gift? (yes) CCQ: Is this a formal question, an informal question or neutral? (neutral) Let´s get him a DVD. / lɛts gɛt hɪm ə diː-viː-diː/ CCQ: Is this a question? (no) CCQ: Is this a recommendation or an instruction? (a recommendation) - Go to Slide 5 go over Form - Cue students to connect the correct form for the sentences - Show answer

Speaking 1 (4-6 minutes) • To allow students to talk

- Go to Slide 6, Teacher does some role reversal for students to practice the small conversation - Follow order (T-Ss, Ss-T) - Send students into BoR for pair practice

Feedback 1 (2-3 minutes) • To provide Ss with feedback on content and language.

- Get SS back from BoR - Go over language use

Speaking 2 (5-7 minutes) • To allow students to talk

- Go to Slide 7, Students do the conversation on their own with the available options. - Follow order (St-St) - Send students into BoR for pair practice. - While monitoring check students’ pronunciation. - Help as needed

Feedback 2 (2-3 minutes) • To provide Ss with feedback on content and language.

- Get SS back from BoR - Go over language use

Speaking 3 (Rescue activity) (6-8 minutes) • To allow students to talk

- T goes to Slide 8, Ask Ss to share ideas for next X-mas. - Send SS to one BoR to share ideas on their own - Monitor and take notes (use OneNote)

Feedback 3 (2-3 minutes) • To provide Ss with feedback on content and language.

- Get SS back from BoR - Go over language use (Slide 9) - Try to CUE ss for different ways to say What about/Why don’t we…?
