Main Aims

  • To present and practice the verb used to in the context of past habits and activities

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice with the verb used to in the context of past habits
  • To provide gist reading practice using a text about historical habits

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (4-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

1. T opens up class by sharing screen with Jamboard 2. T gives instructions: "Ok, now I want you to think about some things people did a hundred years ago. Do they still do these things now?" 3. T creates BoRs, with 2-3 students per room. Sends Ss to BoRs. 4. T ends BoRs after 2 minutes and Ss return to main group 5. OCFB: T nominates a few Ss to share their thoughts for about 1-2 mins

Exposure (5-6 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

1. T shares screen of Google Doc with the text work activity 2. T gives instructions: "Ok, you have three texts. Read the texts and match them to the pictures. Click submit when you finish. You have 3 mins." 3. T sends Ss Google Doc link 4. Feedback: T shares the screen with answers. Ss will have seen the answers already. T ask: "Did you have any incorrect answers?" Go over any difficult questions. If Ss don't have questions, move on.

Highlighting (3-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

1. T draws Ss attention to same text. T gives the instructions: "Find a sentence that means 'something people did in the past, but something people don't do anymore.' You have 3 minutes." 2. After 3 mins, T nominates a student to share a sentence each. T quickly confirms.

Clarification (6-8 minutes) • To clarify the meaning and form of the target language

1. T shares screen of Google Doc with the language clarification task 2. T gives instructions: "Ok, you have three sentences. Read them and answer the questions. Click submit when you are finished. You have 4 minutes." 3. T sends Ss the Google Doc link via the chatbox. 4. Feedback: T shares the screen with answers. Ss will have seen the answers already. T ask: "Did you have any incorrect answers?" Go over any difficult questions. If Ss don't have questions, move on.

Controlled Practice (5-6 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

1. T shares screen of Genially page. 2. T gives instructions: "Ok, now complete the phrases using "used to" and match the phrases to complete the sentence." Demos first question, if necessary. You have 3 minutes. 3. T sends Ss Genially link 4. T: "Now go to BoRs and talk about your answers. You have 2 minutes." T sends Ss to BoRs. 5. Ss return to main group. T shares screen with answers. T nominates a Ss to share answers. T quickly confirms Ss.

Clarification (2-3 minutes) • To clarify the pronunciation of the target language

1. T shares screen of Jamboard 2. T choral drills each sentence on the Jamboard. Ss repeat after T

Free Practice (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

1. T shares screen of Jamboard 2: T: "Ok, now I want you to think about what you used to do in past. Here are some phrases to help you. You have 5 minutes in BoRs." 3. T creates breakout rooms, with 2 students per room (3, if necessary). Sends Ss into BoR. 4. T makes notes of what Ss are saying in each BoR 5. T ends breakout rooms after 5 minutes and Ss return to main group 6. Ss share some of their thoughts in the main group 7. DEC (5 minutes): T shares whiteboard with a few examples of Ss mistakes and samples of good language; T writes them on board and has Ss discuss mistakes.
