Vocabulary: To provide review and practice 'gerunds' to describe Turkish Culture
Subsidiary Aims

Receptive and Productive Skills: To practise both reading and writing skills. To practise skimming for general meaning and scanning for specific information. To give students practise in writing.
Procedure (38-56 minutes)
* Engage Ss by asking them where I am from. * Get Ss in pairs, and ask them to discuss what they now about a stereotypical English person. Elicit answers through WCFB
* Tell Ss that they will read a text about a part of the English Culture. Instruct Ss to that they have 3 minutes to read and answer the question -Are English people cold or private? *Get Ss to do True / False activity (3minutes). Check answers as a class (WCFB)
* Write the elicited TL (from T/F activity) on the board. - They break an uncomfortable silence by talking about the weather. -Disregarding could cause offence and stop a conversation. -English people avoid talking about money. *Identify the Parts of Speech by eliciting. Highlight the TL using different colours. Once completed, elicit from Ss -ing definition. (gerund)
Meaning: (T-S) *Check the meaning of the TL by using CCQ. -Talking to strangers (Is this the 'verb' of the sentence?) (Am I talking to a stranger now?) (Is this 'verb' in action?) Repeat similar questions to the rest of the sentences. Ss should identify that gerunds are nouns that look like verbs. Form: (T-S) Highlight the sentences to show the following sentences. *After prepositions *As the subject of the sentence *After certain verbs Pronunciation: *Drill pronunciation by getting the Ss to repeat the sentences. (T-S)
* Ask Ss to put the carton strip sentences from the text into the correct category rule. Stick the sentences on the board (GW) *Check answers on the board. Highlight the TL if necessary (WCFB) * Further check meaning by asking CCQ about the specific sentences. (Do English people spend years without speaking to strangers? Yes) (Are they physically talking at the moment? No) (Is speaking the action of the sentence? No)
* Instruct students to write a short paragraph describing Turkish people. (PW) Read paragraphs as a class
Do this stage if there is extra time left * Give students HO, instruct them to complete ex 1 (gap-filling). Check answers (PW)
