Main Aims
-
By the end of this lesson Ss would have learned how to give advice and how to respond on advice given. Ss would have practiced the TL to use in their daily lives.
Subsidiary Aims
-
Ss will improve their fluency in speaking through the TL they've learned throughout the lesson.
Procedure (45-55 minutes)
Ask Ss if they remember what Derek's problem was and what advice he was given by Dave.
Ss will look at some more advice from the listening. Give them cut-ups to match sentence halves to make sentences or phrases from the listening. T will monitor but not interfere. Ss will check answers on the answer key on WB which T put up.
Elicit from Ss which different verb forms are being used in the different ways. Elicit Verb 1 (base form) + v-ing. Make 2 columns on the WB for the 2 verb forms and elicit from the Ss which phrase goes into which column. Underline the verb forms. Drill some of the pronunciation Focus on the difference between questions and statements.
Elicit ideas from Ss on how to respond to advice. Tell Ss next exercise is the responses that Derek gave on some advice. They have to think what was the advice each time for the specific response. Do the first example with the WC. Give Ex 2 to Ss to discuss in pairs what they think. Give Ss the tape script to check their answers. Check for any questions.
T put jumbled sentence on WB and Ss to work out what it says. Ss to do Ex 3 in pairs to re-order the sentences. Ss to write correct sentences on the WB. Ss to discuss Ex 4 in pairs. Take WC FB.
Divide class into Group A and B. Tell students that one group has a problem and the other group must give advice. Get Ss to work with Ss in the same group to get their ideas in order to speak to other group. Regroup Ss into pairs of A & B and let them explain their problems to each other and give advice. If time permits, change roles. Get general FB on advice given. If there is time then do error correction on the FB given.
