Description

In this lesson, students will learn new vocabularies about countries and nationalities. They will listen to conversations about nationalities and countries using gist, and specific information, which is followed by "if time"speaking activity, talking about their countries, their nationalities, and the country that they want to visit.

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and and specific information listening practice using a text about nationalities and countries.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To review and practice vocabulary of nationalities.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T will ask students where do they live and what are their nationalities. T will ask students about the country that they hope to visit."What country do you want to visit?"

Vocabulary • To review and practice vocabularies of nationalities.

*I will ask Ss what country they want to visit to elicit as much as I can about words of countries. I will write on WB all the countries that Ss mention.I will divide the WB into two columns, countries and nationalities. I will elicit from Ss what are the nationalities for the different countries." Guess what is the nationalities for these countries in pairs." Check Ss' answers. *As a preparation to ex 1 p.10 wb , Show Ss FCs of famous places in different countries . Ask Ss to guess what are these countries and what are their nationalities.I will present the meaning of the words by using pictures, and I will ask Ss to repeat the difficult words eg. Russia. *I will ask Ss ICQs to check their understanding, eg. yes/no questions: I am from Egypt. Am I Turkish? I use verb to be because Ss studied it in the previous unit. * Draw students' attention to the endings of the nationalities.I will draw a table on the WB and write some examples of nationalities that have the same endings eg.British, Polish, Chinese, Japanese.Ask Ss to come to the board and try to write some nationalities that have the same ending. * To make sure that Ss understand , ask 3 Ss to hold cards have the ish, an, ese endings. Give the rest of the class the incomplete word of nationalities . Get Ss to move around the class to find the correct endings. Ex.1p.10 WB *Now Ss are ready to answer ex1 p.10 wb. Ask Ss to work in pairs to complete the words with an , ese , ish. Make WC checking. EX.2 p.10 WB Get Ss to complete the puzzle in pairs . Monitor Ss' work by observing and helping when necessary. * If Ss find difficulty in recognizing the nationalities and the countries , I will ask three of them to hold

Pre-Listening (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

As a preparation to listening , elicit from Ss where some cities are .eg. Where is Paris?Is it in Italy? Where is Oxford?Give Ss HO2 and ask them to match the cities with their countries. Give Ss HO 3 and get them to check their answers in pairs. Check what do Ss get from the map. -Get Ss to listen and match . Ask Ss to check in pairs. Then, make WC checking.

While-Listening (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

ex.3 p. 19 Give Ss time to read the questions . Ask Ss to listen and choose the correct option individually Ask Ss to check in pairs. Then whole class checking.

Post- Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

"If time " speaking activity: To lead in , ask Ss some simple related questions about the countries and nationalities topic, such as, T:Where are you from? S: I am from Turkey. What is your nationality? S:I am Turkish.T :What country do you want to visit? S : I want to visit ................ . I will write the questions on WB and ask Ss to discuss the questions in groups. I will go around Ss to monitor and observe , and to help them.
