Procedure (42-54 minutes)
The teacher (T) shows the students's (Ss) the pictures and asks questions about them to draw their attention to the context and to revise the new words/phrases they learned earlier (e.g. see some live music, go sightseeing, see an exhibition, have an evening out).
T asks ss to guess what the recording is about by looking at the pictures (e.g. Which city are they in? Do you know anything about New York? Is it an expensive city?) and explains that they are going listen to a recording about spending time in New York with little money. Ss listen to the recording and answer the comprehension questions. T does a whole class feedback. Then, they complete the information in the second exercise. They compare their answers with each other and listen again to check answers.
T asks students some questions about the recording and elicits the future meaning: -Which places in the photos do they talk about? (Central Park, Times Square, Staten Island Ferry, The High Line) -What do they talk about? (Future plans and arrengements)
T highlights some of the sentences from the recording and asks concept checking questions and highlights the use of present continuous for future and be going to (Do the people in the recording talk about the present or future? (Future) Do the sentences refer to the present or the future? (Future) What sentences do the sentences use? (Present continuous tense and be going to) What tense do we use for making arrangements with friends? (Present continuous) What tense do we use when there is an exact time and place? (Present Continuous) What tense do we use for plans which doesn't involve other people? (Be going to)). T elicits and highlights the form of the sentences and drills them chorally.
Ss makes sentences and questions with present continuous/be going to using the prompts. T does whole class feedback.
T tells ss that they are going to work in groups and make plans for a day out in İstanbul having only 20 liras. After they have finished, the groups share their plans with the class. T monitors, takes notes and gives feedback in the end.
