Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of Relative clauses in the context of money-making objects.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To review and practice money related vocabulary.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Show Ss the word file with photos of Monopoly, Cellphone, iPod and Chewing gum. Ask them to answer the questions in pairs. At this stage Ss can also be tested for their knowledge of the target language by asking them to define each item. Feedback: What is monopoly? What is is chewing gum? What is made of? What is the definition for mobile phone?

Exposure (4-6 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a listening text.

Page 78 ex 2B. Students read the sentences and guess the corresponding photo on the screen and then listen to the audio program to check their answers.

Highlighting (3-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language.

* Listen to second half of the audio file to get the sentence: "Vinnie Chieco was the man that gave the iPod its name." * Ask Ss to repeat and write it on the board. CCQs: So who was Vinnie Chieco? [the man who....] Then who was Steve Jobs? [the man who invented the device, who had the idea for it] Highlight the target language and write the following examples: "It is a sweet which is made of rubber." CCQ: So what is a chewing gum? [It is a sweet which...] (Cycling the same question from the beginning of the class.)

Clarification and controlled practice (7-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning and pronunciation of the target language and provide controlled practice

Meaning: Relative clauses are used to give more information about the subject/noun which can be a place, a person or a thing. Clarify the weak form on pronouncing relative pronouns by choral and individual repetition. Distributing sentence cut ups and Ss make complete sentences with them.

Controlled Practice (Optional Task) (3-5 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Page 143 exercise 8.1 and page 79 exercise 6A.

Free Practice (18-20 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Divide the class to three groups of 4 and two groups of 3. assign the following names Chewing gum, ATM, receipt, monopoly, bill (Alternative: A.B.C.D.E) Give each group the hand out from teacher's page 174. Ss read the cards and add one/two more items to their cards. The prompts they use must contain the target language. Each group reads their prompts to the class and other groups should guess what the items is.
