Teaching Practice I- Using Gradable and Non-gradable Adjectives/Combining them with Adverbs of Degree
Intermediate Level level
Description
Materials
Main Aims
-
To make sure the Ss understand the difference between gradable and non-gradable adjectives by using vocabulary. To get the students to combine gradable and non-gradable adjectives with adverbs of degree in phrases, questions and sentences.
Subsidiary Aims
-
To use gradable and non-gradable adjectives in speaking; to speak about emotions in dramatic situations using appropriate stress and intonation.
Procedure (25-45 minutes)
T will write a two column table on the board where the Ss will write their adjective pairs. First, they have to pair the adjectives (from the vocabulary list in Unit 2, pg. 13) and then I will ask them write down their adjective pairs; T will write the pairs on the board.
The Ss will PW by writing five sentences that are true to them where they have to combine adverbs from Exercise 1 with the adjectives from Exercise 2.
Each student will receive a small colorful piece of paper with a vocabulary word (gradable and non-gradable adjective). Ss will walk around the room and find their adjective pair. Once they find their pair, they will write a sentence (PW) using one of the adjectives + adverb.
T will go over the vocabulary (emotions) in the box and the situations to make sure Ss understand them. Then Ss (PW) will go over a list of situations and will be asked to comment on their emotions on each situation. T will ask Ss to 'tick' the situations they have actually experienced and then put them in pairs and ask them to tell each other how they'd feel. Finally, ask Ss to discuss with each other how many of these experiences they have in common.
