Description

In this lesson, students will practice two listening subskills in the context of political demonstrations. First, students will listen for general understanding. Then, students will listen for a more detailed understanding. Finally, they will respond to what they've heard.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed listening practice using a text about biographical information in the context of political history

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification and review of challenging words (furious, demonstration, magazine) in the context of political history

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (4-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T tells Ss they will discuss the lead-in question ("Look at the famous photo...where do you think the people are? What do you think is happening?") in groups of 2-3 in breakout rooms T shares link to Google Slides presentation through Zoom chat Ss discuss in breakout rooms (3 min) T nominates some Ss to share answers from breakout rooms

Pre-Listening (6-8 minutes) • To prepare students for the audio and make its vocabulary accessible

T tells Ss they will work in groups of 2-3 to match bolded words with their definitions on Google Slides presentation in breakout rooms T matches first definition with students to model activity (1 min) T re-shares link to Google Slides presentation Ss match words in breakout rooms (3 min) Ss share answers as a whole group with T T reviews part of speech and conjugation as needed of each term T models and drills pronunciation with Ss

While-Listening #1 (7-9 minutes) • To provide students with practice in listening for general understanding

T tells Ss they will listen to the audio and answer the question in Google Form - Task 1. T shares link through Zoom chat to Google Form - Task 1. T gives Ss 30 seconds to read the question. T plays audio one time. Ss answer question individually. (2 min) Ss compare answers over Zoom chat with group from lead-in. (2 min) Ss share answers as whole class. T has students justify answers with information from the audio.

While-Listening #2 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference listening tasks

T tells Ss they will listen to the audio and answer the questions in Google Form - Task 2. T shares link through Zoom chat to Google Form - Task 2. T gives Ss 1 minute to read the questions T plays audio one time. Ss answer questions individually. (2 min) Ss compare answers in groups of 2-3 in breakout rooms (4 min) Ss return. T plays audio a second time. Ss share answers as whole class. T has students justify answers with information from the audio.

Post-Listening (9-11 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the audio and expand on what they've learned

T tells Ss to discuss the following Google Slides presentation question in breakout rooms for 5 minutes: Do you think she is sorry that she was in that photo? T monitors breakout rooms during activity Ss share thoughts on discussion question as a whole class, being nominated as necessary (3 min)

Feedback & DEC (2-4 minutes) • To provide feedback and/or clarify questions from the previous tasks

If necessary, T answers Ss’ questions on material If necessary, T and Ss correct mistakes heard during activities as a whole group
