Materials
Main Aims
-
To provide gist and detailed listening practice using a recording about coincidences in the context of Facebook
Subsidiary Aims
-
To provide practice for the phrasal verb "comes up" in the context of coincidences
Procedure (28-41 minutes)
Students will break into breakout rooms to talk about the question: "Do you believe in coincidences?" Teacher will close break out rooms and ask students for their groups thoughts on coincidences.
Teacher will work with students to clarify MFP for verb and verb phrases that will be heard in the recording. Namely, "comes up" and "booked".
The teacher will ask the question: "What is the coincidence in this news story?" The students will listen to the news story and decide what the coincidence is.
After listening to news story and deciding what they believe the coincidence is, the teacher will assign the students partner. The students will then check their answers using the chat box with their partners.
Teacher will get students attention. Teacher will facilitate class feedback by calling on students to discuss the coincidence in the news story. Teacher can ask if they heard any other coincidences (besides the main one) to encourage further participation.
Students will listen to the news story again, this time listening for detail. They will use the information in the news story to complete exercise B on their own.
After listening to news story again and completing the questions for exercise B, the teacher will assign the students partner. The students will then check their answers in breakout rooms.
Teacher will review the answers for the detail task with the students. Teacher will elicit feedback from students regarding the answers to encourage participation.
Teacher will separate students into breakout rooms to ask them to discuss the questions: Have you ever put your name into Google or Facebook? Did anything interesting come up?
Teacher will elicit responses from students regarding the two questions they discussed, taking notes for the class and encouraging conversational practice from students.
Teacher will make note of errors in MFP by students and review at the end of class, if time allows.
