To provide fluency and accuracy speaking practice in a pronunciation and conversation in the context of Oprah Winfrey
Procedure (38-48 minutes)
-Ask ss 'What do you remember about Oprah Winfrey?' -Try to elicit sentences about her childhood,career and her success. - Give examples if neccessary. Try to focus on sentences in simple past form. Her father worked in a coal mine. Her mother cleaned houses. She received scholarship. She studied drama. In 1984 she moved to Chicago. etc. - Ask questions to introduce auxiliary 'did'. Did she study drama ? Did she opened a special school in Johannesburg?
- After remembering sentences about the text, give ss task of 'fill in the blanks with past form of suitable verbs. -Ask CCQs. 'Are we going to find verbs for the gaps?' 'Are we going to make the verbs 'simple past?' -Do the first exercise as a demo. -Give ss folded gap-fill hand out of the reading passage. Give some time to think, monitor. -Tell ss to check anwers in pairs. -After peer check , tell them to unfold the hand-out to see the answer key and check their answers .
- Get ss to look at the hand-out. - Tell them to fold it after taking it. -Give the instruction about the first part.' Look at the following sentences and answer the questions.' -Show the first exercise as a demo. -Give some time and ask them to check is pairs. Then WC F/B. -Show Function/use part and get them to choose and underline correct information in bold. Do the first exercise. - Ask them to check in pairs and WC F/B. - Show them the Form part and get ss to fill in the blanks . Show an example (positive form). -Tell them to check in pairs and WC F/B.
Show ss the hand-out 'Complete the questions about Oprah' - Divide them into two groups. - Do the first exercise yourself and ask them to the rest. ' You are going to fill in the blanks with 'did' and 'suitable verbs' - Ask ICQs: ' Are you going to use 'did'? 'Are you going to use verbs?' - Tell ss to do the task individually and then get them to discuss the answers in their groups. -Play the audio to check the answers. -Deliver the hand out 'Complete the sentences with verbs in the box' -Give intructions and do example, get ss to find a suitable verb for each gap and write it in past form . -Ss check in pairs and WC F/B is done.
- Before playing the audio tell the to listen and repeat the verbs they hear. (6.5) -Play the record and get them to repeat in order to understand the difference between -ed pronunciations. -Show ss the table about the pronunciations of -ed on the board. Show one example for each column. -Play the record (6.7) and get them to place the verbs to suitable place. - Ask them to check each other's answers. WC F/B
-Ask ss to fill in the gaps at the bottom of the page. -After a short F/B get them to ask the questions to their partners. -Ask each of them about their partner's aswers.
