Reading Lesson
Upper-intermediate level
Description
Materials
Main Aims
-
To provide reading practice for gist and detail using a text about an autograph-dealer
Subsidiary Aims
-
To expose students to time adverbials through a reading text
Procedure (36-48 minutes)
I will show the students a picture of Rihanna signing her autograph and will ask the students what she is doing in the photo. I will try to elicit the word 'autograph' from them. Then I will drill and write the word on the board with its part of speech. I will tell the students the difference between autograph and signature, i.e, autograph is a signature but the signature of a famous person. Then, in an effort to raise their interest, I will ask the students those questions: "Have you ever got the autograph of a famous person?", "Whose autograph would you like to have?" and "Would you pay someone for an autograph you really want to have?"
Before letting them read the text, I will teach the students these words: indulge oneself, dealer, contact, point-blank, track down. I will give the students a handout and they will match these words with the correct definitions. After they have finished, I will project the answer key on the board. Then I will drill the words and show word stresses.
I will give the students a handout of a reading text and I will ask them to read the text to get the general idea of it. Then I will tell them to match the five questions to the paragraphs in the text. After they all complete the task, I will ask them to check in pairs. After that, I will choose two students and I will give them the answer key to tell the others the answers.
I will tell the students that there seven gaps in the text starting with numbers a,b,c... I will ask them to read the text again and put the sentences in the related gaps. After they all complete the task, I will ask them to check in pairs. After that, I will give the answers to the students.
I will ask two students to come to the board and write their signatures on the board. Then, I will try to analyze it according to "the easy guide to analyzing signatures" on page 138. Afterwards, I will ask the students to do it for themselves in pairs. Students study their partner's signatures for a few minutes and share their views. They then discuss whether the analysis is accurate or not.
If the remaining time is enough, I will let the students discuss these questions: "What kinds of jobs are connected to your interests or hobbies?" and "Would you like to do one of these jobs?" The students will work in pairs. After they have finished speaking, we will have a WC FB.
