Procedure (33-47 minutes)
First of all, I will introduce the concept with animal lovers. I will show them some photos of interesting pets to own. Then as whole class we will talk about these animals. During this discussion I will ask them some questions to start and keep the discussion going. These questions will be in "Present Perfect Tense". The questions are; - Have you ever wanted to have a spider as your pet? - Have you seen someone who has a pig as his/her pet? - Have you ever had a friend who has piranha? - Have you ever wanted to have a pony in your garden?
The students will be given a text and asked to put the verbs in brackets into the present perfect simple or the past simple. I will take some notes about their mistakes while monitoring them. They will study on the text individually and check their answers with the person next to them. They will have three minutes time limit. Then they will check the answers with the audio and also I will give them the tapescript.
I will start with the clarification of the difference between present perfect and simple past tenses. I will use a time line to clarify this and start with the question; 'How long have you had your pet?' Answers; - I've had it since my sixteenth birthday. (It began in the past and continue in to the present. It is unfinished.) - She had it for many years. (It is finished. She doesn't have it now.) - She’s had it for many years. (Present Perfect- third person) I will draw their attention to the form and also I will focus on the pronunciation of have and has as contractions. Then I will focus on 'since' and 'for' in the answers. I will draw a timeline again and tell them that we use; -'for' for a period time, -'since' for a point of time. Finally, I will focus on the pronunciation of 'since'.
The students will work in groups of three for this game. They will have four minutes time limit. I will stick the cards that have time phrases on the walls outside. They will choose one of the group members to pick the phrases outside then they will put these them under the correct category. The categories are 'since' and 'for'. We will check the answers as WC. The group which has the most correct answers will win the game.
The sts will work in pairs. I will tell the students to complete three questions that I will give. They will try to complete these questions in many different ways in four minutes then they will change their partners. They will ask and answer these questions with their partners. While they are studying on the task, I will monitor them. The questions are; - How long have you been ................. ? - How long have you had ....................? - How long have you known ................?
